What Are The Common Types of Cataracts?

Cataracts are a disease that affects the eye by clouding the lens and eventually causing blindness. Although cataracts have a long history throughout the world, there are still very few treatment options aside from surgery, which is also very risky. The way that it works is by affecting the water/protein ration inside of the lens, thus turning clear vision into cloudy vision. Although the different types of cataracts generally act the same way, for the most part there are 3 different types of cataracts. We’ll talk about them more in detail in this article.

The first form of cataracts is called a subcapsular cataract and starts at the back of the lens rather than the front. This usually affects people with diabetes or other eye conditions. In some cases, people that take high doses of steroids can develop this condition.

The 2nd form of cataracts is called a nuclear cataract and begins to form in the center of the lens, thus the name “nuclear.” This is the type of cataracts that typically affects elderly people and adults and is the result of natural aging. Studies suggest that this can be prolonged by antioxidant supplements and avoiding UV rays as much as possible. For example, pilots and people that use tanning beds frequently are at high risk for this type of cataracts.

The final form of cataracts is called a cortical cataract and forms in the actual lens cortex. It begins to expand slowly via spokes until it reaches the center of the lens, at which point vision will be severely impaired. Again, this type of cataracts most often occurs in diabetes patients or people with other diseases.

The unfortunate thing about cataracts is that it is difficult to treat. Although surgery is by far the best way to remove it, success cannot be guaranteed. Surgery is also very risky, which is why doctors prefer to use it only when absolutely necessary. Although blindness can occur over time, there are some clinical trials where prescription eye drops were used to delay onset and spreading of cataracts.

We mentioned it before, but it should be said again. The best way to prevent cataracts is by decreasing your exposure to UV rays. Pilots near the sun and UV rays from space are at most risk; although anyone that is exposed to high doses of UV rays should consider buying some UV blocking sunglasses. Also, take antioxidant supplements to help prevent cataracts from affecting you. Antioxidants do a lot more than just prevent eye damage too, as they can fight off free radicals and prevent many signs and symptoms of aging. If you feel that you are affected by cataracts, then I suggest talking to your doctor about your treatment options.
