Question by Lakai: Cataracts in cats? What are the causes? Can it be cured without eye surgery?
One of our cats (Boris) is 16 years old and his eyes are not looking well at all.. I’m afraid he has cataracts.. he has this problem in his eyes since we was about 11 years old. The place around the eyeballs is reddish and there is white things on the surface of the eyeballs (like cataracts). I know he has this for some time and that it sounds gross but I’m afraid the surgery might be dangerous (because he’s so old) and we don’t ignore this thing, we take a lot of care for him and he will always be our cat.

He’s also fat (not obese) and I notice that he spends a lot of time lying down and that his joints aren’t very strong (because I notice that when she jumps and walks).

What can I do? Please help

I don’t know if they actually do cataract surgery on cats. Cataracts are an age-related problem where the coating on the eye lens thickens and colorizes, which doesn’t allow light to get through to the retina. The cat may eventually go blind (because vision is impaired by light not getting thru the lens, NOT because the rest of the eye or nerve is damaged), and there is NO treatment for cataracts except surgery (not even in humans).
16 is OLD for a cat, and even if they can do the surgery, many vets may refuse due to her age. The joint problem is just arthritis — after all, kitty is 16! There’s a joint supplement for cats called Cosequin that works. I used it on a former cat I had and it really worked for her. You just crush it and put in wet food. (Make sure you get the one “for cats”, they also make a dog formula) It’s over the counter at Petsmart, and 1800Petmeds has it too.

Good luck!

The only way to get rid of cataracts is to get surgery for the poor dog. If you can’t afford it then be prepared to live with a blind dog.

Answer by ashleyuvjra
I’m sorry to say that there isn’t. If the cataract is small enough though, they won’t touch it. :)

I have had cataract surgery and it is not bad at all. If you want to talk about it, just email me.

eileenprince@sbcglobal.net

Hope this helps,
Ashley

Question by jstahrsgal: can I help my pony’s cataracts without surgery?
I have a little pony and I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to at least ease the cataracts without surgery. I would like to stay away from surgical procedures if possible because of the risk involved with horses under anesthesia

There really is nothing you can do.

Surgery is the only option and today’s anesthesia is fairly safe. There is always a risk of reaction, but its low.

Basically you have to outweight the post surgical benefits to the pre surgical.

Talk with your vet, your probably worried about his age etc, but its a very simple procedure to remove cataracts.

Good luck!
