Question by Marla: What do you want to ask about dogs?
What can I do for my 7yr old English Springer Spaniel that has just started to get cataracts in both eyes. She is having a hard time being able to even go outside. The Vet said to change her diet, will this help?

Best answer:

Answer by Aphrodite ☼Dobe uses a PRONG
My cat has cataracts in both of his eyes. Not once has my vet suggested to change his diet and I have no idea how that would help.
The best and only option I can recommend is surgery. He had surgery on one eye at a time and then has eye drops. The problem was he could barely see before they did the surgery – now his eyes look foggy to a degree, but he has no issues with his sight.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by stacy_s13: My 5 yr old cat is losing his site to cataracts. I want to create a fund, “Eyes 4 Otis”. How do you do this?
We live in Brooklyn, NY. The veterinary hospital (Animal Medical Center) is in NYC. The cost of the surgery & one follow up visit is $ 4,700 to $ 4,900. I am currently on unemployment until Nov 8, 2009 & then that is it. Otis, my cat is also not currently employed. He is an amazingly social and sweet boy. He loves to sit in the hallway and wait to greet folks as they come out of the elevator. He loved to jump and catch toy mice in the air. His sight is not as good as it once was. He’s much more cautious walking around the apartment and carefully sniffs and reaches out his paw to make sure it is safe. I really want him to see again and be happy and healthy.
Otis has been diagnosed by Dr. Vanderwoort (the Ophthalmologist from the Animal Medical Center). I would love to help others in same situation as well being able to help Otis. I am looking for information on how to do this. Insurance will not cover any expense for a pre-existing condition.

Do you mean a fund for yourself or a fund for you and other people in the same situation?

Either way, raising awareness is the first step.

Question by rickinnocal: Is this the healthcare you want for the USA?
Record numbers of Britons are travelling abroad for medical treatment to escape the NHS – with 70,000 patients expected to fly out this year.

And by the end of the decade 200,000 “health tourists” will fly as far as Malaysa and South Africa for major surgery to avoid long waiting lists and the rising threat of superbugs, according to a new report.

The first survey of Britons opting for treatment overseas shows that fears of hospital infections and frustration of often waiting months for operations are fuelling the increasing trend.

Patients needing major heart surgery, hip operations and cataracts are using the internet to book operations to be carried out thousands of miles away.

India is the most popular destination for surgery, followed by Hungary, Turkey, Germany, Malaysia, Poland and Spain. But dozens more countries are attracting health tourists.

Research by the Treatment Abroad website shows that Britons have travelled to 112 foreign hospitals, based in 48 countries, to find safe, affordable treatment.

Almost all of those who had received treatment abroad said they would do the same again, with patients pointing out that some hospitals in India had screening policies for the superbug MRSA that have yet to be introduced in this country.

Andrew Lansley, the shadow health secretary, said the figures were a “terrible indictment” of government policies that were undermining the efforts of NHS staff to provide quality services.

Great article that reveals the other side of ‘free’ healthcare.

Yes. It doesn’t matter when you got treated for something, what matters is when did you get diagnosed with it. Are you talking about job disability or social security disability?
