Question by Sleep: My cat’s eyes are cloudy, but is she too old for treatment?
Over the last few months my cat’s eyes have been gradually turning cloudy. She isn’t yet totally blind, but she is more cautious in her behaviour so I think her vision has deteriorated. She doesn’t appear to be in pain (she doesn’t squint, her eyes aren’t red or discharging, and other than behaving with some extra caution she isn’t acting differently).

My question is, is there any point in getting her treated? She is 15 years old, and I’m not sure what treatment could be done. If it is cataracts, and the cataracts was removed, would it just come back? And is there any medication she could take to prevent it from getting worse? Thanks :)

I would take her to the vet.It most likely is cataracts and i’m not totally sure if they can do surgery on cat eyes, but the vet should be able do give you drops and info. on treating it.
Good luck to you and you kitty=]

Question by John H: N-acetylcarnosine Cataract Treatment?
Hi,

My girlfriend’s dog has developed cataracts. Because of her advanced stage, the vet recommended against surgery.

After looking online, she found some eyedrops that supposedly act to reverse the cataracts and purchased them. I am not sure which eyedrops she purchased, but my own searches seem to pinpoint N-acetylcarnosine.

The websites that advertise it or sell it seem dubious in nature, similar to those sites selling pills that purport to increase penis length, miraculously remove weight, etc… My question is, does anyone know anything specific about those eyedrops?

I am assuming they don’t work… But what exactly are they made of? “acetylcarnosine” ??? Are they hazardous to her health? My girlfriend is really hoping they work, and I don’t want to discourage her prematurely.

Thanks!

N-alpha-acetylcarnosine has indicated potential for treatment and correction of cataracts in humans. But to be frank, I know very little about using human drugs on animals so I did a few searches and came up with this:

http://www.eyesight.nu/nacetylcarnosine__can-c.htm#What%20is%20N-acetylcarnosine?

It doesn’t specifically address anything about crossing the species line but it very clearly explains the chemistry of the drops.

This may be a bit more helpful with regard to your concerns:

All signs seem to suggest this course of treatment is a safe alternative to surgery.

Question by arnold schwarzenneger: Cataract treatment using Honey? Does it really cure cataract?
I found it on this website: http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Cataract.html

The only cure for cataracts is surgery to remove it. It is a condition that comes with age, as part of aging. One can postpone getting it early in age, by maintaining healthy eyes, using supplements to strengthen the eye, improve circulation and so.

Question by xxtropicalbarbiexx: Dog cataracts? how can i tell and what treatment?
Hi,
Me and my boyfriend have recently noticed that r dog has been walking into things and not really recognising where sounds or anything is coming from and acting quite clumsy.
when we had a look in his eyes tonight we seen that they looked quite cloudy more so in one eye than the other, could this be cataracts? if so what can we do, iv heard about surgery but my dog is quite old (15, nearly 16!!) and the vet may not want to operate, is there any more solutions? can any one give me a ball park figure about how much the op may cost??

thanks in advance!

Talk to your vet, but my dog used to have it….my father’s an opthalmologist so he and the vet used to talk about doing cataract surgery – so it IS possible….

Cataracts are basically the hardening of the lens so the surgery would just replace the lens with an artificial or real lens (for dogs probably artificial)……I don’t think it’ll be that scary for him it’s done quite quickly and relatively painlessly.

Good luck.
