Question by Conjurer: Nystagmus and retinal dystrophy treatment?
Hello.
I was born with cataract in 1986 in both eyes, performed cataract surgery in 1987 – 1988 and got cataract removed, in 2001 – 2003 I’ve implanted IOLs for both eyes, my doctor says that I’ve Bilateral Nystagmus and Bilateral vitreo-retinal dystrophy.
My far sight is kinda poor, scored 20/40 and 20/60 with correction, I use glasses since my childhood and never used contacts.
Is there any possible way to improve? can retinal dystrophy and nystagmus be cured?

There are no effective treatments for most retinal dystrophies or for nystagmus. However, it would be best to ask this question of your eye doctor who is familiar with your case.

Your vision is only slightly reduced, should be legal for driving in most places and is unlikely to interfere with most jobs or schooling.

Question by M.S: Treatment of eye sight with laser. Side effects.?
What are the side effects of having a laser treatment for your far sighted eyes. Is there any chance of having an operational restriction in a future cataract developed in your eye?

Best answer:

Answer by Little Miss Sunshine
I had it done for my nearsighted eyes 2 years ago. Not lasik but a similar procedure (flapless), Dr. Petelin (the best). I can’t find his website. Anyway, no dry eyes, no major side affects at all. In fact, my night vision is much better than with glasses before as well. My vision is 20/15 in both eyes. I’m super pleased with getting it done. I would do it over and over again. As far as cataracts I’ve never heard a link, however living in AZ like I do I will probably have to deal with them someday with all the sunshine we have. Dr. Petelin does cataract surgery too. :)

Question by Amy C: Is there any treatment for temporal arteritis BESIDES prednisone?
The doctors think my mom has this. A few years ago, she took 10 days of low dose prednisone for a really bad case of poison ivy (this happened three times over two years), and during the third course, she had really bad symptoms. Every time she bent over to pick something up, and sometimes even if she just moved a certain way, she would start coughing, gagging, and end up throwing up. This happened several times a day, and did not go away when the course ended. The prednisone had damaged her adrenals and her liver, and it is only in the last few months that she has been able to sweat in a sauna, so bad was the damage to her adrenals. Her liver is also doing better now, but it took a long time.

The prospect of having 1-3 years of prednisone, starting at a really high dose, is terrifying her. She says she would rather go blind. She already has glaucoma and early cataracts, both of which can be made worse with prednisone, so she may go blind either way. (Her mother, my grandmother, was blinded from glaucoma, so she isn’t being ignorant about the blindness.)

Are there ANY alternative treatments?

Best answer:

Answer by LJ
There is but Prednisone is called “The wonder drug”, and I the other drug isn’t as effective. The “wonder drug” may be true and has worked for some people, but Prednisone just about killed my mom.

My Mom has been on it for 6 years and it was finally killing her, so they weened her off of it, and now she’s prednisone free.

Both cateracts were removed, my mom has glaucoma, has expereince some blindness,

Your situation with your Mom sounds identical to my Mom’s. The side effects were what was really making her ill and basically distroyed her.

Look into other options for treatment.

Question by Sawyer: Alternative treatment for Sarcoidosis?
A friend of mine has Diabetes (under control), and Sarcoidosis. Eyes have cataracts; she’s getting lumps under her skin; always in pain. Any alternative therapy for Sarcoidosis?
Thanx.

You know I’d never heard of this until one of my employees was diagnosed with this about two years ago but I have some advice for your friend. I’m sure that he is probably on Prednisone so he should continue that if prescribed by his physician but another good treatment is acupuncture and also 1-5mg of melatonin. I’m not a physician so this is just information based on my employees experiences and I can tell you that the above alternative treatments dramatically changed her life. Good luck!
