Question by X: Time to file law suit of medical malpractise?
My father recently received cataract surgery and the doctors said that his right eye will clear up, but it hasn’t for longer than they said. In short they made a fault and my father made 2500 for the surgery out of his pocket and 6000 for the insurance company to pay. We decided that if his eye doesn’t clear up in a couple of weeks we will consult a lawyer for a lawsuit. I was wondering generally for whoever knows, what is the average time we have before our claim is invalid, or how much do we have until we can file the claim? My father received the surgery in August and late July, for both his eyes, however one eye sees far and the other near. They said to change it may be more risky and he might lose his sight. So we decided to not change it. So how long do we have? Thank you, all answers are appreciated, thanks for the help.

Doesn’t sound like medical malpractice to me. No lawyer is going to touch that case.

Surgeons can perform cataract surgery on both eyes at the same time but do not choose to, in the US at least. The reason is due to the risk of infection. Even though the risk is small, if an eye threatening infection occurs, isn’t it better to have only one eye involved rather than potentially both eyes?

If your doctor did not recommend surgery, see another eye specialist that does cataracts. It may be that your doc does not do them. Or maybe they are not bad enough yet. But if you are having difficulty seeing, ask for a second opinion. My hubby has had cataracts removed from both eyes and is sooooooo much better! I have a small one that is not big enough to remove yet.

Hello, I had cataract surgery on both eyes when I was 16-17 years old. I then got the “secondary” cataracts zapped about 3 years ago. I just turned 22 and I cannot see clear at all out of my right eye (this happened about a month or 2 ago). My left eye is perfect though. Can someone (preferably optimologists) help me please?

I can’t help you at all..But i can surely relate to you. I got a cataract in my right eye when I was 4 years old. My opttimologist and surgeon told me I was one of their youngest patients ever. It was very shocking to my parents..Sorry that i can’t help. i hope that all goes well , it must be very scary

Your have listed out a whole bunch of questions. Even though there are a few tricky ones there, most of them should be pretty answerable. Why are you having a hard time? What dont you understand? Or are you jus trying to get someone to do your homework for you!!???

I’ll try to make it short, but you know how that goes. My first cataract surgery was done by a doctor with a very poor bedside manner; he was curt and brusque. At the post-op visit, I asked him if cataracts came back, and he said, “No. You have a cataract in your other eye. See you next year.” Exact words, spoken at me while he was going out the door.
Needless to say, I did not have him do the next surgery. That was five years ago. Now for six months I have had cataract-like symptoms in one of my eyes – that feeling of having bathed your eyeball in cellophane or vaseline. If you’ve ever had one, you know what I’m talking about. I found out last week that it is a post-cataract effect that causes build-up behind the lens and can be removed with lasers on an in-patient basis, and can occur quite frequently when one has a cataract removed before their 60’s.

My point is, if that first doctor had taken even one minute to explain this, I wouldn’t have gone through all this needless worry. Wouldn’t you be a tad bit upset, too? I’d love to hear your thoughts and doctor stories.

Yes he sounds totally insensitive.
One of my first posts on here was Dr related.
A while ago now I went about my knee that was and still occasionally does give me trouble and he said one must expect things like this at your age!
Well I’m not a violent person but this made me see red and walk sorry limp out of there and ask for another opinion.
I have since had a better and more productive outcome and can only hope that you do as well.
Your Dr was totally wrong leaving you bewildered and worried,it’s all well and good being able to diagnose and treat ailments,but the rest of the treatment lies within the realms of information and a good bedside manner. Good luck with your eyes hm I hope you get an early resolve this.

My dear friend is no longer able to work because of major health issues. She has been a solid member of the American work force for over 35 years. Her medical problems have become so advanced that she has been forced to (what she hopes to be)a time out.Let me come right to the issue,she had cataracts on both her eyes.She had health insurance through her employer that covered this surgery. At that time only one eye was advanced enough to be covered. Now the other eye has become compleatly shrouded by the cataract and with no health insurance shes having to deal with new complications as a direct result of the impaired vision,head aches,nausea on the physical level,with this an on going 24/7 ordeal I see it taking a mental toll also.She needs your help in finding an eye institute at which Dr’s donate their time for people in need who just can’t afford this surgery. I want my friend to see again. So I humbly ask for your help. Thank you.

Try the Lions Club in your area or The Department of the Blind. The Knight’s Templar also will help sometimes. Also, the Workforce Development Force will sometimes help so the person can become employable again. Many of the universities will help also.

I am looking at a 4yr old mare who has cataracts. She sees well enough and jumps without a problem. The problem is I have had problem horses before where they got injured and never made a full recovery. I don’t want to make the mistake of buying a horse that is only going to get worse. So my question is; Do cataracts in horses get worse over time?

Extra information on the subject would be great also!

ok so i had a detached retina twice with in 6 weeks back in 2008 and due to the surgeries to fix it i quickly developed a cataract.
when in sunlight everything would just look white cuz the sun was sooooo intense and when in a dim or dark place such as outside at night with only street lights it was like i was walking with my eyes closed.
i know that the sensitivity to brightness and darkness are symptoms of cataracts so i thought as did my dr that as soon as i had the cataract surgery this would go away.
well IT HASN’T and no one seems to know why.
its very frustrating cuz i had lost a little bit of Peripheral vision due to the retinal detachments so it is harder to see as wide of a range as before and the having trouble in the sunlight and darkness doesn’t help matters.
its never been easy to see in bright sunlight and darkness but it was always do able. now if i go in the sun i have to hold my hand on my forehead to see normally and hats don’t seem to help. and if i walk into somewhere dimly lit i have to grab someones hand.
I HATE THIS!
can anyone tell my why i am still having symptoms of a cataract even though the cataract is gone?
i have asked my retina specialist and my cataract/glaucoma specialist and they have no answers.
and i had the surgery at wills eye hospital in philadelphia pa which is about an 8hr car ride so i can’t very easily make an appointment for him to see me.
