Question by jj.jr.: Does anyone know if cataracts come back after removing it through surgery? thank you.?

Best answer:

Answer by Patti C
You can develop another cataract at any time. It would all depend on your age too. Older people do develop cataracts, they are slow growing. The odds that an older person would develop another one are high.

If a younger person has a cataract, that is unusual. The chances of a younger person developing another one would depend on why they had the first one. Usually the doctor is able to help with information on cataracts in younger people.

Question by xxjerseybaby3: If an eye that has already went through a cataract, is it good to perform a laser on that eye?
My dad has already gotten a cataract on his left eye and now his eye doctor all of sudden is asking him to perform a laser surgery for no reason, but the doctor claims its a preventative method. My dad is 44 years old and has type 2 diabetes. I felt it was unnecessary but I’m not a doctor so any thoughts on the subject would be great.
I’m pretty sure its a preventative method for diabetes retinopathy but I am unsure if there is a laser surgery to prevent diabetes retinopathy.

well it depends on the “laser” surgery. sounds like if its “preventative” he/she may be talking about a laser peripheral iridotomy to prevent high pressure from a narrow angle. if thats the case its not a “bad” idea. the fact that he’s diabetic doesnt matter for that.

but if you’re talking about laser RETINAL surgery like panretinal photocoagulation to “prevent” vision loss from retinopathy…well that probably needs to be done if he’s leaking fluid.

probably not talking about lasik.

could be laser trabeculoplasty as well to prevent high pressure

could be yag laser to stop an “after cataract” or posterior capsular opacification…

lots of “laser” here. too many choices…need to narrow it down some

edit: retinal or panretinal photocoagulation…i guess depending on how its worded could said be to “prevent” vision loss or further vision loss. nobody does PRP on eyes that are NOT leaking fluid, and when one jumps to doing PRP: who needs it & when & how much is done and where its pointed is all up for interpretation.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by Karen J: Should I put my Scottie dog through surgery for cataracts? He is 12 years old.?
He is very healthy otherwise and still goes on walks and chases rabbits (he can’t catch them, never could), eats well, navigates through our 2-story house just fine even though he doesn’t see very well. Is it better to put him through the fear and trauma of surgery, or let nature take its course and allow him live in peace, maybe wondering why his people don’t turn the lights up? Which is the more compassionate course?

from what you said, i would let nature take its course, dont traumatize him and the surgery could kill him

Question by a_gowardhan: When I see with each eye through a pinhole,I see a translucent patch in the central part of the view?
I am a high myopic person.Recent eye examination report states, Cataract in the initial stage. There are lots of floaters in the vision. What could be the reason for a translucent patch in the central portion of vision of each eye?

Best answer:

Answer by princeidoc
i wouldnt judge your vision or try & diagnose anything by how it looks thru a pinhole. its probably a light diffraction problem.

floaters that you see in your own vision would not be from cataracts, and neither floaters nor “initial stage” cataracts would be visible to you in your own eye by any method.

if you have a lot of NEW floaters since your exam, you may need another exam.

Question by playwriter2180: What are the symptoms of cataracts and how are they taken care of through surgery?
i am an insulin dependant diabetic (35+ years) and i think i have cataracts…how are these taken care of and is surgury usually successful?

Best answer:

Answer by AJSMOM
symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision, feeling of film over eye and glares and “halos’ around lights (such as headlights from cars) the surgery is a relatively minor one in which the ophthalmologist makes a small incsion on the eye and removes the cataract,( which is basically a clouding of the natural lens in your eye). After that an artificial lens is implanted into the eye and this lens is made to last a lifetime. I work in ophthalmology and this is a routine surgery with a very high success rate. If you are having blurred vision you might want to monitor your blood sugar carefully since your vision does fluctuate along with your sugars.make an appointment to see an ophthalmolgist and determine whether or not your vision can be corrected with glasses, or if the cataracts are ready for removal. good luck ..
