Question by cant take heat?get the f%&k out!: has your dog ever been diagnosed w/an ulcer in his eye??mine did and they said he thinks he is blind after?
they removed the ulcer..i was pretty sure thinking it was cataracts cuz his eye looked gray blue and the pupil was white.i know that cataracts can occur to animals do to eye trauma which is what happened to my do but they sai no that its an ulcer.his eyelids are sowed shut and must stay like that for two weeks.after the surgery they told me that they dont think he will be able to see.what if the vet doesnt know what he was doing?could my dog have been misdiagnosed?..does anyone know if this is the way an ulcer look like when its in the eye and if so..what happened to your dog did he go blind??

Answer by chihuahua mama I assume you are talking about corneal ulcers. One of my chihuahuas has been getting them for about 3 yr and they are coming more frequent all the time. Never had to have surgery for them. The vet gives us some drops, we use them a couple of days and the eyes clear up. If we have drops already at the house, we just use those drops. Onl;y have to take her to the vet about twice a year just to get new drops. Never I say again did we ever have to have surgery. The eye looks bluish and the light bothers her. That is when we know that it is the ulcers again. Like I said she has been having these for a few years and hasn’t gone blind yet. I do know you need to take them to the vet once they start looking blue or they can go blind.
BTW, I have had corneal transplants in both eyes and also the cataract surgeries. The corneal transplants have done great, but had trouble with one cataract surgery and now have little vision in my left eye.

Question by Siobhan H: During cataract surgery, if a person does not replace the lens with an IOL, can they see? Is there a reason?
why someone can not have an artificial lens implanted? Would there ever be nerve pain associated with an implant?
could they use glasses to see instead of the lens? Can they get cataracts again with or without the lens replacement?
Best answer:
Answer by gracelyn The lens is necessary to bring vision into focus. If an IOL is not used to replace the clouded lens that is removed, then although light could enter the eye, the vision could not be focused and objects would not be seen. Probably only light and shadows could be seen in an eye without a lens. I’m not sure if there would be a reason a person could not get an IOL implant done, unless there was actual physical damage to the eye itself. I have not heard of pain inside the eye after surgery, but there would be pain/discomfort associated with the cornea (outer surface of the eye) from the incision. From google, there are many lenses to chose from and most seem to have good results. You could search around and see if you find more information – be sure to check out ‘eye anatomy’ while you are at it.

Question by Catharine Oaxaca: Dog cataracts…are they removed by a regular Vet or an animal eye specialist? Any clue as to…?
…the cost?
Our 9 year old Dalmatian, Spike has lost a lot of his vision due to cataracts. Just wondering if anyone has had cataract surgery done for their pet, what kind of Vet does this surgery…and a ‘ball park’ cost. It’s a hard decision, at his age…and on our (fixed) budget…if we should have his vision restored.
If money was no object, it would be a ‘no brainer’…but we’re trying to determine life expectancy, a quality life for him..and what’s affordable for us.
Love to hear from anyone who’s had it done for their pet <:O)

Answer by More Bored Collie Cataract surgery is expensive because the surgery is extremely delicate and requires a great deal of skill and technical equipment to accomplish. The procedure in dogs is much the same as the procedure in people, but most dogs do not have medical insurance that will cover any of the cost. The average cost of cataract surgery in dogs ranges from $ 1,500 to $ 3,000 per eye, depending on the facility and skill level of the surgeon.
