Question by Soso: I got disqualified from meps they told me to apply for a waiver?
I was disqualified because my vision in my right eye is so poor and I only have light perception and my vision can’t be corrected. My left eye is perfectly fine, and I had a lens implant for my right eye known as cataract surgery. Anyway the doctor said I need to apply for a medical waiver, but my recruiter said he doesn’t think it would get granted. Please I really need any honest advice that you can give me joining the Marines has been my long life dream I passed everything except for my eye exam for my right eye
Please Help me……..
I see people who are almost blind without their glasses and contacts and they go through. I see perfectly fine I dont even wear glasses and i dont have any side effects from my surgery i gave them the paper work to prove it. If my waiver is not granted I can write to congress men I will use every way I can even if I dont join I’ll know I did everything I could of done
Yes I know what I need to do and the last thing I am looking for is sympathy I just needed some advice. I was also wondering if anyone knows how writing to congressmen works and my recruiter doesnt know how the process works either.

Waiver questions are the hardest because no one can give you a exact answer on what your outcome for your medical waiver would be. One of the main things is if the doctor at MEPS gave you a waiver recommendation or not, if he did your chances are good if not, well to be honest your chances are not that great. You mentioned that your eye is not correctable which also may hurt you but it is always worth it to apply anyways and make sure your recruiter does it. I got DQ for a minor shoulder surgery i had when i was 15 and the doctor gave me a waiver recommendation, it still took about 3 months before it came back approved so if i was you just keep your head up, submit your waiver request and hope it gets approved. Good luck

Question by danielle: my dog has a hazy ring around both eyes, on the eyeball, i went to the vet and they said it could be cataracts

Best answer:

Answer by TKS
Cataracts come with age, just like it does with people. Diabetes Mellitus can also cause it. Cataracts can be removed by a specialist, but since the lens isn’t replaced (since we can’t do an eye test to see which one would work the best), it’s usually best to wait until they are very opaque. Cataract removal is expensive and I personally don’t know anyone who has actually had it done.

Question by janis: I have blue eyes and just had cataract surgery and they are bluer! is that possible?

Best answer:

Answer by David
Cataracts cause cloudiness in the cornea. So removing them would remove any obstruction altering color, yes.

Question by Little Francis: How are they going to put me to sleep?
My cataract surgery was done at 2 days old and one week old. I have had multiple eye surgeries about once a year nearly every year after until I was about 8.

I’m getting lens implants sutured to my iris. The surgery will last from 45-60 minutes. I would be having local anesthetic, but due to my age and condition I have to be put to sleep.

Are they gonna use gas? Injection? IV drip? A combination of some of those? Anesthetic cream so I don’t feel the second and third?

With the information provided about my surgery, what do you think?
Yeah but that stuff smells gross..

the gas won’t hurt and the injection will only hurt a little bit

Question by Ms. Moonbeam: Why Can’t You Have Cataract Surgery As Soon As They Begin To Form??
Why is it the doctor tells you that you have the beginning stages of cataracts but they have to be “Ripe” before they can remove them. Why do we have to be almost blind before they will do the corrective surgery?

Mine might be in the beginning stage but my eyes are blury even with my glasses on. Why won’t the correct the problem now? And just what does “Ripe for Surgery” Mean?

Please help answer this. I would not mind paying to have my vision corrected now but they say you cannot do that either. Do you have to wait for your Insurace to pay?

Best answer:

Answer by reallyits2sweetiesnow
There used to be a time that cataracts weren’t removed until “ripe” however that isn’t the standard now. A procedure called phacoemusifacation is used now and “ripe” isn’t really an appropriate term for any physician to be using. Cataracts may be surgically removed anytime. The patient must meet certain visual qualifications for insurance to pay. Additionally, it may be in your interest to ask about deluxe intraocular lenses if you decide to proceed with surgery.
