Question by Valerie A: cataracts symptoms and surgery?
I have recently been diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes. the only symptoms I have is in the sun I cannot see unless I shield my eyes with my hands or wear a visor with a brim to block the direct sun then it is fine. And at night I do see the circles around lights. I want to put off the surgery as long as I can as I am going through something devastating Ijust had a major house fire and am living in a hotel until things get settled. I just do not want any more pain or trauma right now..Is it safe to wait? Did you have these same kind of symptoms? If you did have the surgery, how did it go and how do you see now? Medicare will be picking up this bill, does that mean they do it the cheapest way out? Thanks for all your help,

Had the same problem with both eyes, one after the other. It will get worse, not just the light sensitivity, you will find that you lose your eyesight, not completely straight away. It is like looking through fog or misted windows, that’s the best way I can explain it.
Had the operation done and it was really worth it. Day surgery, no pain, just a little sore.
Put your name on the waiting list, it might take some time before you can get it done through medicare and it hopefully you get it done before it gets bad.
Wish you all the best and hope things get sorted soon

Question by Robb R: Early symptoms of cataracts. How long does one wait before the surgery consequences exceed the problem?

Best answer:

Answer by Serena
My grandmother had to have cataract surgery a few years ago. They’ve made even more improvements since her experience. Most eye doctors would be able to tell you what they prefer, as far as whether you wait or not. In my family’s experience (2 grandparents, an aunt, and a couple of great aunts), they wait for the symptoms to affect your vision severely enough to interfere with your everyday life/tasks before they do surgery. The patient will often have to go in for several evaluations over the span of weeks or months in order to evaluate the progression of the cataracts. As with all things, that progress would determine when surgery would be best.

Ophthalmologists and other eye specialists would be able to evaluate an individual’s overall health and determine when the effects of “the problem” become worse than the side effects of “the cure”. In any specific case, all factors from medications, health history, and other pre-surgical evaluations would be considered in the decision.

No these are not any of the symptoms.
If you are having these problems see your doc ASAP. Sounds like migraines to me.

Question by playwriter2180: What are the symptoms of cataracts and how are they taken care of through surgery?
i am an insulin dependant diabetic (35+ years) and i think i have cataracts…how are these taken care of and is surgury usually successful?

Best answer:

Answer by AJSMOM
symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision, feeling of film over eye and glares and “halos’ around lights (such as headlights from cars) the surgery is a relatively minor one in which the ophthalmologist makes a small incsion on the eye and removes the cataract,( which is basically a clouding of the natural lens in your eye). After that an artificial lens is implanted into the eye and this lens is made to last a lifetime. I work in ophthalmology and this is a routine surgery with a very high success rate. If you are having blurred vision you might want to monitor your blood sugar carefully since your vision does fluctuate along with your sugars.make an appointment to see an ophthalmolgist and determine whether or not your vision can be corrected with glasses, or if the cataracts are ready for removal. good luck ..
