Question by suzie Q: How long can you have cataracts before requiring surgery?
I have just been diagnosed with having cataracts. I am just wondering how long I can go before having to be operated on. So far they are not bothering my vision too much. Optometrist says they are moderate. Does anybody know the answer? Thanks for any information you might have.

It varies from person to person.

It depends how fast they decide to develop to the point where it really interferes with your vision.

Could be months, could be a year or two

A friend of mine told me that undergoing laser eye surgery will cause cataracts 20 years after the operation. Is this true?

No, not true at all.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Laser surgery is on the outer layers of the cornea, and cataracts are inside the eye on the lens of the eye, which isn’t touched by the laser.

Is it suction, a vacuum, glue, auto-natural grafting of some kind or even Magic? What exactly hold the new lens in the proper place inside the eye after Cataract scalpel surgery? And please, we all know it is NOT duct tape.
Good grief, any chance you could append that into grade ‘normal’ English? Why do Brainy-achs have to speak or write like they just stepped out of a clinical text book?

* ris supported PIOLs: this type is gaining more and more popularity. The IOL is attached by claws to the mid peripheral iris by a technique called enclavation. It is believed to have a lesser effect on corneal endothelium.

* Sulcus supported PIOLs: these IOLS are placed in the posterior chamber in front of the natural crystalline lens. They have special vaulting so as not to be in contact with the normal lens. The main complications with this type is their tendency to cause cataracts and/or pigment dispersion.

I’m 19, I just had a vitrectomy, scleral buckle,and an air bubble all in one surgery last monday around 2:30 PM. I went back for a check up yesterday at 8:20 AM and the doc said my airbubble was only 30% there so whatever im doing is working. i had to keep my head down the whole time and i couldnt lay on my back or a cataract would form, but he said i didnt have to keep my head down during the day from now on, and he said the bubble should be gone by friday(thats my next checkup) before the surgery he told me that recovery time should only be like 1-2 weeks, but im reading online that people are saying 3 months minimum, my eye barely hurts anymore buts its still swollen, the swelling has greatly improved since yesterday, is it because im so much younger than the usual crowd of people that get this surgery that my time is so much shorter?

idk about that. i know that it takes 3 months of your eye being stable to really be out of the woods as far as it redetaching.

how long the gas bubble lasts depends on what type of gas they use.
i had a gas bubble that lasted about 12 days and then i had one that lasted for 21 days.

did you have to wear that green “warning gas bubble in eye” wrist bands? its like a disclaimer. i kept mine cuz it was funny to me.
didn’t you find keeping your head face down was very hard? when i went to sleep i was basically smothering myself.
at one point i put my mattress on the floor and kept a space for my face to hang off the end and then put pillows for my forehead to lay on.
my neck/back hurt soooo bad from having to keep my head down.

Everything about the career of the ophthalmologist seems right for me except the fact of surgery. I am fine with the idea of doing laser surgery but I however can not do any surgery blood related. I can be the assistant of a legit surgeon when it involves blood, but never a surgery for something involving so much pressure like the reattaching a retinal detachment, or removing a cataract and stuff like that.

Is there a way where I can become an ophthalmologist that only does small surgeries such as laser surgery? If not, are there any similar careers that would land me in a working environment of an eye clinic? I’m open to any office jobs! I am in high school and my passion for the human eye.

I have had one eye done for distance and not for over a month trying to decide which is the better way to go for the other eye. Should I have a high tec lens put in for near or like my doctor suggested is that he can make the other eye semi-mono. Then again maybe I should have both for distance,but I can never remember to bring reading glasses & prefer no glasses and what is the percentage of other people liking one for near & one for distance? What are the pros & con’s

“hi tec lens put in for near”? what lens? a multifical? few multifocals work very well when only used in 1 eye

if we’re just discussing the pros & cons of distance vision in both eyes vs monovision:

distance vision both eyes:
pros: see better far away
cons: need reading glasses

monovision:
pros: don’t need reading glasses very much if at all
cons: don’t generally see as well far away, plus some people can’t get used to it quickly

are you one of the ones who won’t be able to get used to it quickly? nobody knows.

My procedures were one week apart due to my poor vision. I got checked yesterday and she said I can legally drive without glasses. I know she couldn’t correct the astigmatism 100%. I was told to just pick up reading glasses for the computer and reading at the dollar store for now. These glasses aren’t much help, make it somewhat clearer but not perfect. I’m so frustrated because I can’t see the floor clearly or anything more than 8 feet in front of me clearly. I can’t get glasses for 4 weeks and feel so depressed with this change. I’m an active person and can’t even return to work like this. Do your eyes keep improving for a few weeks or is this the sight I’m left with. I have 1.75 and 3.50 from dollar store, but still not clear. Is the astigmatism causing this. I’m going to go crazy waiting 4 weeks. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Your Vision can change over the next several weeks, which is why some doctors won’t prescribe until 5 weeks or so after surgery. You may have to change the lenses more than once if you get an Rx too soon.

In respect to the readers, the higher the number the closer you would have to hold the print.So if you can choose something that is clear at about 18 inches for reading and then something for arms length for the computer, that might work. +3.50 sounds too strong for readers for you, especially if you can see relatively well with no correction for distance. You might try a +2.50 and for computer you might want to start at 1.25.

What was your experience with it and did you have to take a lot of eye drops before and after the surgery?

My wife, Ann, had it done last week and she is taking a lot of eye drop medications. But she is seeing real good now.

Yes, I had it in both eyes..and a laser done also..did not need any eye drops that I can remember..but it was scary cause I thought I was going to lose my eye sights;;until I learned more about it..=)

I have had a distance lens put in and now the The other one is for “distance.” He said if I have it for near it is possible that I may have to wear glasses to see anyhow for close up but them again maybe not. Has anyone else had this done and which is the the better way? Should you have both lens the same and for sure have to wear glasses for close ups or should you have one for “distance” & the other one for “near” and take a chance of not having to wear reading glasses for close ups to read things.
Do you know they regretted getting different lens? One for far and one for near.

The great majority I have ever met prefer clear distance vision in both eyes , and use readers.

I have met many who regretted getting one for close and one for distance. That is also done often with laser correction, and most I have met who had that done regret it also.
