Question by Nick H: How soon can I fly after detached retina surgery?
I had the surgery last Tuesday at 5PM CST (1/23/07). The “air bubble” the surgeon put in my eye has been shrinking steadly but is still maybe 20% there. My flight to the Orient (from Wisconsin) leaves in exactly 2 days (48 hours). I understand that the bubble should be entirely gone in order to fly. Does anyone (especially a qualified eye surgeon) have any idea if I’ll be able to fly, will the bubble be gone? I’m 51 years old, 6′2″, 180 pounds, exercise and take loads of suppliments so in general, pretty good health…other than the fact I had 2 heart attacks 17 years ago and a cataract in each eye several years ago. True. THe reason I’m asking this is because my company needs an answer by late Friday. My answer is “probably” going to be evident – if the bubble is there, STAY HOME. If it’s gone, FLY. Any insights appreciated.

That’s a question for your doctor, not strangers in a forum. Your doctor knows the severity damage and what involved repairing it. Therefore, only he can answer thoroughly and accurately. Not strangers in a forum who have no idea of the original damage.

Question by Ms. Moonbeam: Why Can’t You Have Cataract Surgery As Soon As They Begin To Form??
Why is it the doctor tells you that you have the beginning stages of cataracts but they have to be “Ripe” before they can remove them. Why do we have to be almost blind before they will do the corrective surgery?
Mine might be in the beginning stage but my eyes are blury even with my glasses on. Why won’t the correct the problem now? And just what does “Ripe for Surgery” Mean?
Please help answer this. I would not mind paying to have my vision corrected now but they say you cannot do that either. Do you have to wait for your Insurace to pay?

There used to be a time that cataracts weren’t removed until “ripe” however that isn’t the standard now. A procedure called phacoemusifacation is used now and “ripe” isn’t really an appropriate term for any physician to be using. Cataracts may be surgically removed anytime. The patient must meet certain visual qualifications for insurance to pay. Additionally, it may be in your interest to ask about deluxe intraocular lenses if you decide to proceed with surgery.

Question by LINDA W: cataract surgery scheduled soon?
I am scheduled to cataract surgery soon I have to have one eye done then 30 days later the other, my doc wants to do one eye farsighted and the other nearsighted, I would prefer to have them both nearsighted and wear glasses for farsightedness is this possible

Had a second opinion? Seems to me the eyes should match in acuity. Also I question your preference; if you are farsighted without correction, then half glasses for reading would be more convenient because you can look over them for distance and avoid all the putting on and taking off. And your shades could be window glass and save some money.

Question by poodiebear: how soon to fly after cataract surgery questions. thank you!?
I asked this questions yesterday and appreciate all the wonderul answers. Here is my delimma. My mother in law is here in Michigan, she is due to fly home to Florida on the 28th of July. Her second cataract surgery for her other eye is on the 24th. I know that you have to have the day after, next week 2nd week and 3rd week follow-up, according to her doc. I spoke with the nurse and told her that this is a money issue, she cannot afford to change her ticket or stay away from home any longer she has been here 2 months. Nurse said the only reason for her not to fly was because she has to see her doc for follow up and no other surgeon is happy about seeing another doc’s patient for a follow up. I understand that as well, but in this situation can it be done? She does have an eye doc in Florida. Or the other way to go would be to just have the doc in florida do the other eye or have her doc here recommend someone in Florida to do the other eye? Any opinions? I’m at a loss here

That would be entirely up to the Ophthalmologist performing the operation.
