Since my rat Edgar has had a stroke recently, I’ve been a little worried that he is over-vigorously grooming the paralysed/unresponsive side of his face. The nose and eye on that side both bleed fairly regularly, perhaps due to his forceful grooming.

Tonight whilst carrying him downstairs to investigate the house I noticed that his eye on the affected side was an odd shape, sort of squared off almost. Closer inspection showed some kind of bump on his eye in the form of a raised white line. The eye also seems rather dull and almost dry-looking at times.

I am not too worried about his vision, as he has never really been able to see too well anyway because of his colouration, but does the eye pose any other health risks to him if it IS damaged?

Is it likely that he accidentally scratched it during grooming or could it actually be a cataract? How do I tell the difference?

I don’t want to have his eye removed/operated on as it is a stressful surgical procedure upon an animal that isn’t really young any more, but if it’s likely to cause him serious harm then I might have to consider it.

I’m looking for peoples’ opinions before I take him to the vets about it so that I can get an idea of what we’re faced with and what to say to the vet in the first place, but I’ll certainly be taking him so there’s no need to remind me to do that.

My dog is about age 14 and is a cocker spaniel.
Both of his eyes have turned a hazy gray color (i think it’s cataract).
But, today, around and on his right eye there was this meukas/puss looking stuff covering his eye, on the outside and inside, all over it.
I wiped it off.
Does anyone know what this might be?

Note I can not take him to a vet.
Nothing serious has happened to him, but he is getting old and can no longer hold his bladder in, can hardly jump, and has bad hearing, and runs into things every now and then =\.

Well of course best is to the vet but it could be dry eye or something more severe. at least keep it clean and warm compress until you can take to the vet

my kitten was recently diagnosed with FIP- they took a fluid sample from his lungs and used that as their form of diagnosis, so it wasn’t formal but the vet said they are almost positive that is what he has. aside from that, I have been noticing that his eyes sort of glow- if that makes any sense. They seem more reflective and I cant really see much of the color in his eyes. I just took a closer look and it appears that his right eye has some sort of cluster inside. It just looks like many tiny specks all over his eye. I am wondering if this may be a symptom of FIP and if not, could someone please tell me what this may be? I have already researched glacoma and cataracts and it does not seem like it would be either because his eyes are not cloudy, they just glow and have those specks. Also from the symptoms I described would you say that he could be going blind?

Did they send the fluid to a lab?
Does your cat have a fever 99% of fip cats have a fever
You need to do the titer test for this.
Was your cat tested for felv/fiv..
Most cats get the wet form of fip but the fluid accumulates more in the abdomen.
Here is my advice knowing what i do know about fip and cats..
If your vet is wrong and the cat doesn’t have fip you need to find out before your cat dies what is really wrong….the only way to be totally sure it’s fip is to do an autopsy after the cat dies..we don’t want to do that so what you need to do is…
fip titer test..it’s a simple blood test. It can’t tell you 100% that the cat does have it but it can tell you if the cat doesn’t have it.
I had a sick kitten…it was literally dying…she would not eat or drink for weeks..after thinking that’s what the cat had after all other tests were done we did the fip titer test..it showed the cat did NOT have it and what she did have was bad virus that she finally over came and got better.
IF YOUR VET HAS NOT DONE AN FIP TITER TEST YOU MUST FIND A NEW VET.

I have a female tabby short hair(named Dorito) who is about 8 or 9 years old, spayed after having quite a few litters, and is overweight. Not obese, but she’s a fatty. She gained the weight after she was spayed.

For the past few years, she has been keeping her left eye closed, or more often, half-closed, while the other is quite open. Or she’ll just squint both eyes. That’s pretty much how her face is most of the time. If she’s startled, she’ll open both eyes completely, but she more often than not either squints or has her left eye half closed.

What could cause this? Nerve damage? Laziness?

There’s no fluid, puss, swelling, nothing what-so-ever to indicate a problem, other than the squinting itself. Her eyes are clear from stray hair, debris, cataracts, etc.

Her last few litters of kittens died to unknown reasons. I’m not sure if this may help at all. I believe whatever it was came from inside my cat through nursing, because we had kept a kitten(named Jo-Jo) from her second litter, who lived well. However, when Jo-Jo had her first litter, they all died as well.. And these were in different houses, so they weren’t exposed to the same environments. I believe whatever had caused Dorito’s last few litters to die was also affecting Jo-Jo’s kittens and was hereditary, but didn’t effect the mothers at all. I have no idea if it’s related, but just throwing that in there.

Jo-Jo has since been given away to another family.

Should I get my kitty checked out, or is she just being lazy?

Does she wear glasses? If I were her I would see and opthamologist, they should be able to resolve any vision problems she is having and maybe she just needs glasses or an upgrade in the glasses prescription she already has. I hope this helped. MC

yesterday my dog’s eye was kind of bothering her. it was a little more watery than normal and seemed irritated. i wake up today and her eye is swollen and there’s a whitish spot on the bottom of it when you lift her eyelids open. her eye seems cloudy or something and the middle of her eye looks really weird. what could cause this over night all of a sudden?? could glaucoma set in that fast? she’s always had a cloudy spot on her eye that i assumed was cataracts. obviously i’m taking her to the vet so i don’t need any ‘take her to the vet now or she’ll die’ answers.

I have an 8 year old orange tabby and he has been winking one eye a lot. I took him to the vet and the vet saw a little bit of brown disharge stuck under the eye, said his eyes looked fine (no cataracts). But he still has discharge and winks a lot like his eye is hurting him. Sometimes there is brown discharge around his eyelid and sometimes there is clear discharge on/across his eyeball. It has been some time that I’ve noticed him winking, and he is now starting to over groom himself in places to the point of having bald spots. I wonder if he’s doing that out of stress over his eye. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help him?? Thanks

First , get another Vet! He needs an antibiotic in case of an infection a.s.a.p.! It will help in healing and the pain. Try saline solution, twice a day. It will soothe his eye and help heal . Yes he is stressed out and hense the over grooming. He probably has a scratch on his eye and the more he touches it the more it will hurt and not heal. Try a collar from the vet for 2 -3 weeks so he doesn’t keep touching it, Also, use the saline , clean it twice a day , once in the a.m then in the p.m. He will be happy in no time.

Not cat allergies. Not traditional pink eye. Been to many doctors all of whom are scratching their heads. It is getting worse. I looked up chlamydia, and that doesn’t seem to be the case. Nor does mere”dry eyes” this is in one eye and is painful from my brow to the bottom lid , but especially the eyeball itself. Please help!!!! My eyes look red and i have a little discharge in my eyes when i wake up, but only sometimes, and it is not like the pink eye i have had in the past.not at all. it is like somebody punched my eye. and then, it goes away, or almost seems to, then it swings back into action and puts my little eye in misery. I have no health insurance and i have spent over $ 700 trying to fix this. A rare exotic disease? A new form of pink eye? cataract rupture? an ancient fated curse? what is this? any ideas are much appreciated!!!

I have had a lot of surgeries on my left eye. I have two sceleral buckles, vitrectomy, cataract lens replacement and many laser treatments for a detached retina. I have had this problem with the pain when I focus on something that is close to my eye for a while but it seems to be getting worse. I can not pinpoint when it started so I am unsure what caused it. If I focus with each eye individually there is no pain but if I focus with both eyes I have the pain in the left eye. Any help would be appreciated.

When you focus with both eyes open, you must not only FOCUS the eyes correctly but you must also CONVERGE the two eyes so that they both point to exactly the same near point. This requires not only focusing of the internal muscles of the eye but also you must stimulate the medial rectus external ocular muscle of both eyes so that they will turn inward. I wonder if the contraction of the left medial rectus is causing pain at the insertion point on the left eye. If you have inflammation or scarring in or around this insertion point then that could be possible.
