Surgeons can perform cataract surgery on both eyes at the same time but do not choose to, in the US at least. The reason is due to the risk of infection. Even though the risk is small, if an eye threatening infection occurs, isn’t it better to have only one eye involved rather than potentially both eyes?

Question by Miss*Blue: If you have cataracts in one eye, would vision be the same as if normal seeing ppl were to close one eye.?
Hope you understand what I mean. If I have a cataract in one eye, would I see – as If i’ve got one eye closed?

Can someone look better if you have a cataract in one eye and then have the surgery and the look bad because you can see them properly.

Weird question but I am 100% serious! I dont have a cataract (obviously or else i’d know)

Thanks heaps! :) sorry about how stupid this question sounds. heh.
Need to clarify what i mean.

If you have a cataract, you see someone and think they are good looking because you can’t see them 100%. Or chances are they’d just look the same as if you had pefect vision
p.s it’s only in one eye.

Thanks for your answers already :)

It depends how bad your cataract(s) is/are.

If they aren’t bad, you can see everyone and everything pretty much normal.

If they’re bad, you may see them well enough, but it would be tunnel-vision.

Question by watchdemknights: Can I have the stitch removed and get tested for a new eyeglass prescription on the same day?
I had cataract surgery about a month ago and the 4 stiches replaced by 1 stich 3 weeks ago. I am going on a 3 month business trip soon.
The Dr told me to have the stitch removed in the middle of Nov.

I would imagine you could, the holes left by the suture will be tiny and shouldn’t interfere with your vision at all, the cornea heals very quickly. When you go to have the eye exam for the glasses just make sure to tell the technician you had the suture removed-shouldn’t be an issue.

Question by caffee: I have congenital cataracts, and I’m just wondering what percentage of the world are in the same situation?
I’m fourteen, and I have (well, had) congenital cataracts. I’ve had surgery on both my eyes, so now my eyesight is pretty good. I’m just wondering what percentage of the world have congenital cataracts. Is it rare, or common? Because I haven’t heard of many people who are in the same situation as me.

I am 47 and was told several years ago that I have very mild congenital cataracts. My ophthalmologist told me that because of the cataracts my eyes do not adjust well to bright lights or sunlight. I have always found bright lights and bright sun very painful, and she said that this was the reason.
