Sure is a good price – for the operating surgeons!! With respect, and depending on the age of the dog involved, unless you have this sort of money to burn, I’d not bother. The first sense, for a dog (other than maybe a sight-hound) is their sense of smell. I’ve had elderly dogs with cataracts and they have lived perfectly normal lives, obviously not seeing as well as before, but well enough that they weren’t bumping into things! Obviously their eyes were bluey, but looks aren’t everything. Personally I’d not put an older dog through this surgery, and certainly not for this sort of money, which is probably correct nevertheless.

Add – I’d always get a second opinion on the condition of your dog, in any case.

Question by wiggi: When Can Cataracts be removed?
At each yearly eye exam the Dr. tells me they aren’t ready to be removed yet but my vision is getting worse. Do I have to go blind first?

Do you go to a specialist for this? My father had his cataract removed as soon as it started to hinder his sight, which was about a year after being diagnosed. He saw a specialist who deals in nothing but things like this though. Maybe you need to change doctors.

Question by rshipley63: Once removed can “cataracts” develop again years later in a dog?
When our dog (Bischon Frise) was about 18 months old she had cataracts develop very rapidly in both of her eyes. Successful surgery was performed in Denver, Colorado, by a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Her follow-up care – over the next 12 months – was totally positive; no negative effects from the surgery. Thankfully for nearly 10 years now she has remained ‘problem free’ but in the last month we have noticed a milky color in one eye, with some development in the other. She has an appointment March 25th with her Vet. Our question is: has anyone ran into the similar situation? Thank You, in advance, for all positive feed back. By sharing [your] experiences we will then have additional “tools” to evaluate and compare (with her doctors recommendation) to help and support her.

What your dog had were most likely genetic juvenile cataracts. Cataracts do not grow back as the surgery removed the lens where they form. What you are seeing is probably some opacity caused by nuclear sclerosis, which is a normal part of the aging process. It generally does not cause blindness & is not painful, just a normal part of the aging process. Good luck!

Cataract surgery is done by a specialist usually so it isn’t going to be really cheap anywhere. I would ask your vet for a referal

Question by Gene: I had cataracts removed from both eyes Nov and Dec.?
My eyes are very dry and not clear. My closeup vision is 20/20 and distance is 20/25 with some astigmatism which I didn’t have before. Any suggestions on having more comfort . I wear a contact for distance vision.

You need to call your ophthalmologist and ask for suggestions on what you can use. You do not want to use eye drops that are over the counter that could affect your vision and is incompatible with your contact lenses. I’m sure he can give you some recommendations – call them tomorrow and ask.
