If you are going to get a liscense to heal people, you need to do your own homework and KNOW YOUR SH*T!!!

Skeeving by on something as important as this is repugnant, go be a cabbie or something if you don’t have the strength to do your own homework.

Getting a license without knowing the course work is FRAUD (not to mention very dangerous and possibly deadly for your patients).

Question by Brianna S: Questions about rabbit with cataracts
I have a three-year-old rabbit (NOT OLD) and she has a cataract in her left eye. I called a vet today to make an appointment but he’s not too experienced in rabbits, i dont know anyone, except for one lady that I am calling tomorrow. So I was wondering:

1. Will it affect her life span?

2. will she be okay

3. She seems normal, and is at the right weight, should I be worried

4. Is there any treatment besides surgery, like a natural remedy, that I can create, or should I just call the other vet?

Help is greatly appreciated, Thanks a million!

Best answer:

Answer by ash_marie_wv
The thing about rabbits it that they definitely don’t handle pain well. If her eye is hurting, it may affect her life span. One the other hand, surgery may lead to complications which could be worse. If she seems healthy and normal, then she’s fine. Be worried if she’s sluggish or peckish.

Best wishes

Question by Akarui: I have a few questions about cataracts?
Can you go blind with cataracts, or does it only cause blurred vision?
What are some causes for cataracts?
If you’re born with cataracts, and for whatever reason can’t get treatment for it, can you have them successfully removed 10 years later?

Best answer:

Answer by william
When the lens inside the eye begins to cloud over it’s called a cataract. At first vision seems to improve which is called ’second sight’. Then as the cataract progresses the vision deteriorates leading ultimately to blindness. If the cataracts are removed the vision returns.

There are many causes for cataracts such as too much exposure to ultra violet light rays or just plain old age. If a person lives long enough they will probably someday start to get a cataract.

If you are born blind from cataracts they must be removed before the age of 5 in order to obtain adequate vision. If the cataract was only partial and you have some useful vision you don’t have a 10 year deadline to remove them.

Question by Hier Kommt Die Sonne: I have a few questions about dog cataract surgery?
My dog is 12 years old. She has cataracts in both eyes, so we’re going to get the surgery to get rid of them. I don’t think they’re too far advanced yet, but we’re not going to let them get very far.

-Do we have to go to a dog ophthalmologist? [this is what I'm assuming, but I want to be certain]

-Her age won’t interfere with it, will it?

-How much does it cost? *

-What exactly do they do?

-How quick is recovery? What do we have to do until she’s finished recovering?

*The cost doesn’t matter, we’re willing to pay anything for her. I just want to get an idea of what we can expect.

I apologize if any of these seem dumb.

Answer by Loki ❆ Wolfchild
Not dumb questions at all…unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to most of them. Yes, you will have to have a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist do the surgery…it’s something most general vets won’t know how to do.

I can guarantee you it won’t be cheap…perhaps $ 1200 per eye or more?

Now, a bit of opinion. You have a senior dog. I have had many senior dogs with cataracts, and I would never consider doing this surgery on them…why? It isn’t worth the risks. I hate putting older dogs under anesthesia, and the possibility of secondary glaucoma occurring after surgery doesn’t make me happy.

The main reason, however, is that I’ve found my old dogs get around just fine with cataracts. They live happy, normal lives, although they may bump into something occasionally if you put it in their normal path. :) Onset of cataracts is slow, so they have time to get used to their fading vision…it isn’t something that takes them by surprise. Since dogs don’t rely as heavily on sight to get by, it really isn’t a big deal to them. I had a dog live to the age of 17 with juvenile cataracts that had blinded him by age 12. He explored the yard, ate with gusto, greeted me with a happy tail every day, and lived just fine.

Just something to think about.
