Question by cougar: I had cataract surgery on both eyes with PCRI procedure performed.?
My procedures were one week apart due to my poor vision. I got checked yesterday and she said I can legally drive without glasses. I know she couldn’t correct the astigmatism 100%. I was told to just pick up reading glasses for the computer and reading at the dollar store for now. These glasses aren’t much help, make it somewhat clearer but not perfect. I’m so frustrated because I can’t see the floor clearly or anything more than 8 feet in front of me clearly. I can’t get glasses for 4 weeks and feel so depressed with this change. I’m an active person and can’t even return to work like this. Do your eyes keep improving for a few weeks or is this the sight I’m left with. I have 1.75 and 3.50 from dollar store, but still not clear. Is the astigmatism causing this. I’m going to go crazy waiting 4 weeks. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Your Vision can change over the next several weeks, which is why some doctors won’t prescribe until 5 weeks or so after surgery. You may have to change the lenses more than once if you get an Rx too soon.

In respect to the readers, the higher the number the closer you would have to hold the print. So if you can choose something that is clear at about 18 inches for reading and then something for arms length for the computer, that might work. +3.50 sounds too strong for readers for you, especially if you can see relatively well with no correction for distance. You might try a +2.50 and for computer you might want to start at 1.25.

Question by Indiana Jones: i’m going to have the nd-YAG laser procedure done on my eye and i have a few Q’s?
i had cataract surgery with IOL implant on may 18th and i just went to my dr today and he said that i would need nd-YAG laser done. (i know what its for) but i’m not sure exactly how its done.

i understand they dilate your eye and the laser breaks up the “secondary cataract”. my dr said it was painless but i’m a bit nervous.
here are my questions:
-do you have to stare directly at the laser? cuz i’m afraid that my eye will not be able to continuously stare in one spot. i try very hard to stare at something but after a few seconds my eye jumps somewhere else.
i just don’t want to move my eye and have the laser damage my eye some how.
i’m also worried cuz when i get nervous (even though my dr already explained that i have no reason to feel nervous about this) i start shaking like a leaf so i don’t want to accidentally move my head either.
-do they give you any type of anesthesia to ensure there is no pain or is there really no need for it cuz it really shouldn’t hurt anyways?

I had this procedure done several months ago on my left eye, after cataract surgery in April, 2008.

I think you are worrying needlessly. It is a very simple procedure that only takes a couple of minutes. You do not stare at a laser, although there will be a spot of light the doctor will ask you to look at. The doctor will have ways to deal with eye movement, so don’t worry.

Ask for a Zanax pill if you want to be more relaxed during the procedure. Take it about 45 minutes before the procedure. There is no pain associated with this procedure.

Question by Skydancer: A Question for those who have had this surgical procedure, PLEASE???e?
I am scheduled to have a cataract removed from my right eye next week. It is in its’ early stages but it interferes with the clarity of vision I need toward my work.
I must admit I am a little afraid, because I so much depend on my vision as a visual artist…
What I would like to know is this :
1) Does it hurt, for I am being given a local.

2) Am I to be made to watch the procedure in a mirror above me?

3) How long will the procedure, once it is completed, interfere with my getting back to my daily work?

4) Are there cases where the procedure causes adverse effects…I need my eyes! Both of them preferably?

5) Must I wear an eye-patch afterwards, and for how long?

6) What is the guarantee, percentage wise, that the vision in that right eye, (I had previously had looked through a chink in a burning kiln, a hundred times too many, without protection), will be back to normal?

If anyone has gone through cataract removal surgery, would you please be so kind as to help me prepare, by answering these questions.

I thank you!
Fair enough 2 ask what a cataract is: A membrane which develops causing the lens of the eye to become progressively cloudy, so that vision is impeded from clarity. If caught early as mine was some months ago, it can be lifted off and 1 can see clearly again. If caught a lot later, which has happened to an elderly friend I have, it’s hard to remove. It may have damaged the lens to the point where a new lens has 2 be positioned into the eye.As it is now, when I work, my right eyes tears and becomes very cloudy of vision.
I especially dislike anything having to do with my eyes, because I depend so much on them for my work. But I must have the surgery done
before it becomes worse, and I am constantly doing close work..so I’m grasping at the chance 2 have it corrected NOW!
The thought of needles is frightening, Jeopardy! I hate needles. But 2 be put under I am going to suggest! I don’t want anything close to my eye! BUT a couple of weeks with a patch will interfere with my daily schedule!!!
Thanks grandma..I will insist on going under. I don’t like to be touched in the first place. Being touched near the eye would traumatize me…I can assure you of that. Jeopardy mentions an eye patch at night…knowing me, I’ll take it off, because ANYTHING which feels foreign to any part of my body I’ll pull off especially if I’m sleeping. My concern is not following what the doctor advises and doing myself harm. If I g had to wear a patch during the day, for any interference to the healing process, I will be as angry as a hornet..but I’ll try to do my best, not doing anything which will threaten my vision.
That is, if I can remember that as a must!

No matter!…I have to have this done. It is my fault after all. I was the one who looked into a high intensity fire inside a small-room sized kiln, over and over again – defying practical advise. So here I am, paying the consequences. However to work without my eye tearing and clouding over is something intolerable..so! Thanks all a lot
Thank U Patricia, for your entry which has caused me more relief.I have to admit that I’m terrified of hospital atmospheres where 1 feels caught and unable 2 have a say as 2 one prefers. And my elderly friend whose artificial lens had moved, after his waiting forever since his cataract operation 20 years ago, hasn’t proven successful. So he’s quite blind in the afflicted eye.I don’t think there is much more to be done for him and he’s 78 now.It is a relief 2 know there’ll be no coke bottle bottom glasses after the procedure.Nor walking around bent over.I just would like 2 read, type, write, do my work with both eyes open. For as I’m typing this now, my right eye is closed, because if I open it,I see through a blurriness from the right, and the effort to focus, immediately makes my eye tears. So it’s time as they say : to face the “musica”, hey?
I’ll will insist before I’M THERE, at hospital, that I’m put under.I can’t imagine needles nor mirrors over me, if I happen 2 look. Thanks LOTS!

Question by Indiana Jones: during an nd-YAG procedure how do they keep your eye still?
i had cataract surgery and IOL implant on may 18th and on wed june 3rd i will be having the nd-YAG procedure done.

i just found out yesterday that i needed to have it and my dr made it seem like a very quick and easy procedure so now i’ve done some research on it and i does look pretty simple but i still have 2 questions.
how do they keep your eye still so that the laser hits where it is supposed to? i am afraid that i’ll have to stare at one spot. that scares me cuz my eye cannot stare at any one direction for more than a couple of seconds and then it wants to move somewhere else.
and how do they keep your head still? cuz i am a person that can’t stay completely still like if someone says ok don’t move i will feel the need to move.

also i know that it doesn’t hurt or anything but i’ve always been a worry wart and i know i’ll be nervous so do they ever give you anything to relax?

Its a very simple procedure. You will yourself become very still throughout the procedure time. Its a psychological phenomenon. So relax, go ahead and get the laser done.
