Go get a 2nd opinion. If you need to, ask your doctor to recommend an opthomologist. Your doctor should have a good idea of who’s good or not in your area.

I would go to a specialist for medical eye problems, an ophthalmologist, and be checked to be sure there are no medical problems. Don’t go to an optometrist at a place that sells glasses because that’s not the same thing. I was having issues with my vision and it turned out that I had a serious problem with my eyes which left untreated could cause blindness. I had swollen optic nerves in both of my eyes as a complication of lupus. I’m not saying that you have anything serious, I am simply saying it is better to be safe than sorry. I wish I had gone sooner than later as my eyes were damaged, but at least I still have my vision and going to the ophthalmologist is what saved my vision. My father is completely blind and has had glaucoma, cataracts and a detached retina, so I know a little bit about diseases of the eye. Please get checked if you can as soon as possible.

As you are aware, the “S” in SLE stands for “systemic.” Lupus can affect almost any part of the body, the eye included. It is very important that any one with SLE see an ophthalmologist at least once a year for a complete dilated exam. The reason for this is that Lupus can affect parts of the eye (retina and optic nerve) that cannot be evaluated without dilation.

Additionally, some of the medications used to treat SLE can result in blurred vision. Prednisone, for example, can result in cataracts (and sometimes glaucoma). In general, cataracts do progress with time. However, it is important to continue the medications prescribed. Any change should be discussed with the physician who prescribed them.

Fortunately, cataracts can be treated with cataract surgery. If you are considering surgery it is important to research your eye surgeon. I have written an article about how to choose a surgeon. Follow this link to read it:

i’m just wondering if there is anyone out there that knows of any better place than wills eye center cuz from what i’ve been told is they are the cream of the crop and have seen it all (except for me i guess)

I was adopted so I do not know anything about my family history.
When I was around 5 my mother (not my stupid pediatrician) spotted cloudy spots on both my eyes a.k.a cataracts.
The cataracts were removed shortly after(I’ve had about 4 surgeries) they were discovered and with my right eye they attempted a corneal transplant but it failed.My right eye is also surgically dilated because it wouldn’t do it with the eye drops.
I’m now 25 and was recently (about a year ago) diagnosed with glaucoma in both my eyes.I have to take eye drops everyday I take timolol once in the morning and once at night and take zalatan at bedtime.I try to stay regular but sometimes I’m not and I can tell when my pressure goes really high because my right eye swells.
Ever since i was diagnosed though i seem to get bad headaches everyday even when using my drops regularly.I’m wondering if there may be something wrong or if it is just the drops? What kind of medicine can they give me to help that won’t interfere with my drops or could something else be wrong? Is there anyone else that has gone through this and has any helpful advice other than “contact your doctor”?

I am sorry to hear about your problems, but it seems your eyes’ tension is under control with treatment. So it must be some other cause for headaches. If it is not very frequent, you may take any painpills for it and you will be ok. But if it is frequent (you said daily), it needs to be investigated. I would suggest relaxing and deep breathing exercises (yoga) considering these to be tension headaches, but if your condition persists or aggravates, you must get it checked. BTW, have you undrgone CT or MRI of the brain?

No. Diabetes can cause eye problems very easily. An eye problem may be an indicator that he has diabetes but an eye problem can not cause it.

I’ve been seeing halos now for the past 2 months, and even with treatment I’m not noticing improvement.

I am on two medication:

1. Alphagan

2. Omnipred

My eye specialist tested me for cataract, glaucoma and other possible causes for seeing halos, but all test results were negative.

When the halos come on strong, my vision become extremely blurry and sensitive — so sensitive that they feel like they are going to blank out…

I do have eye floaters, which is not correctable. But I never used to see halos in my vision.

I want to hear from you.

So here’s my question after the very long (so sorry) background history.

Are cataracts normal at any age for Min Pins?
Do their faces gray at different ages?
Does it sound like his symptoms normal for him?

P.S. I have an appointment with an ophthalmologist on Friday, but I would like to have some input and other ideas before I take my dog in.
Whatever has affected his eyes has in fact affected both eyes.
His left is worse than his right though.

This depends on whether the cataracts are localized to a small area or are more general, and whether they affect one or both eyes. A small cataract in one eye will not affect your dog’s vision at all. At the other end of the spectrum, cataracts may progress rapidly or slowly to cause complete blindness.Congenital cataracts or those that develop at a young age may mature and be reabsorbed, resulting in improved vision. This is unpredictable. In the process of resorption, liquefied lens material may leak into the eye causing inflammation and possibly glaucoma.With their acute senses of smell and hearing, dogs can compensate very well for visual difficulties, particularly in familiar surroundings. In fact owners may be unaware of the extent of vision loss. You can help your visually impaired dog by developing regular routes for exercise, maintaining your dog’s surroundings as constant as possible, introducing any necessary changes gradually, and being patient with your dog.You may suspect your dog is having visual difficulties and/or you may notice discoloration of your dog’s pupil(s). Your veterinarian will be able to see the cataract with an ophthalmoscope. Even when not causing visual problems, cataracts may be discovered on a routine ophthalmoscopic exam. Cataracts can be removed surgically. The decision whether to do so is based on several factors, such as whether the cataracts are progressive, the degree of visual impairment, and the dog’s temperament. To prevent postoperative problems, the dog must be cooperative and quiet, especially in the first week following surgery.

Sorry to hear about your mother. Cataract surgery is generally well tolerated and adverse reactions occur in less than 1.5% of procedures. Shingles is the reactivation of the varicella virus which causes chicken pox. After we get chicken pox, the virus lives in nerve cells. The virus can become active again in a specific distribution causing a rash and pain known as shingles. This can occur in any location on the body, including the eye and surrounding skin. When shingles affects the eyes it is known as Herpes zoster ophthalmicus and this is one of the most serious types of shingles, because it could potentially lead to blindness without treatment. It is unrelated to the surgery. The shingles vaccine reduces the chance of getting shingles, but it does not completely eliminate it. Unfortunately it did not in your mother’s case. The shingles vaccine reduces the chance of shingles developing anywhere. I have never heard that the zoster vaccine is less effective in preventing shingles involving the eye and I am familiar with most of the studies about this. Perhaps her doctor knows something I don’t. Anyways, no this is not a normal post-operative course and sorry that your mother has gone through all of this.
