Question by Alma J: Chinchilla eye operation?
I just found out Munchies (my chinchilla) has cataract in her eye which has turned into a milky blue color. I was wondering if anyone has any idea how much a single eye operation would cost for a chinchilla???

Answer by TXChinchi
A simple fur-ring removal at an emergency animal clinic ran me $ 500. With the exotic animal visit, and the surgery, I will be looking well over $ 500.
These guys don’t do well under prolonged anestesia, so if it isn’t life treatening or painful for your chinchilla, I personally wouldn’t risk the animal through it.
Be sure to talk to your vet for a quote and ask tons of questions including length of procedure. While my chin was under, his heartbeat kept rising and then dropped fast. I eventually had him put down a few months later. I couldn’t find what was wrong with him and he was clearly suffering.

Question by April: My grandma has been diagnosed with atheromatous aorta…But my question is, can she undergo eye operation ?
she has cataract and we are just worried that the eye operation might affect her aorta….
Best answer:
Answer by SapphireTigress
Are all the members of her healthcare team approving the surgery? Has her cardiologist “cleared” her? If they all approve, then surgery will probably be okay. If her eye doctor doesn’t know about the aorta problem, he/she MUST be notified before proceeding with surgery, to obtain medical clearance from her cardiologist.
Good luck.

Question by dopi: Will a cararact operation correct astigmatism?
Is it necessary for the eye surgeon who replaces a defective natural lens with an artificial lens (cataract surgery) to do an extra procedure to correct astigmatism or will the perfect artificial lens permit at least 20-30 eyesight? Or is the astigmatism caused by some other part of the eye that needs to be changed by the surgeon before the cataract surgery. I think that eyeglasses will correct astigmatism if it exists after the cataract surgery. If additional pre-cataract surgery is necessary to correct for astigmatism, what actual procedures are involved?

Irregular curvature ofthe cornea causes astigmatism, so the lens replacement will not correct it. Astigmatism is treated with glasses, or contact lenses, or laser surgery.
