Question by SUPP: Are you able to become an ophthalmologist that only does small surgeries like laser surgery?
Everything about the career of the ophthalmologist seems right for me except the fact of surgery. I am fine with the idea of doing laser surgery but I however can not do any surgery blood related. I can be the assistant of a legit surgeon when it involves blood, but never a surgery for something involving so much pressure like the reattaching a retinal detachment, or removing a cataract and stuff like that.

Is there a way where I can become an ophthalmologist that only does small surgeries such as laser surgery? If not, are there any similar careers that would land me in a working environment of an eye clinic? I’m open to any office jobs! I am in high school and my passion for the human eye.

Yes, there are surgeries. Call around town to other vets and ask their prices. Also, you can contact your local shelter and ask them if they have any deals or know of any.

Question by chvs2000: Somebody who can only see with one eye?
A friend of mine has a cataract in his left eye, he didnt pay attention to it until he was 14, by that time it was too late and now he cant see through that eye.

Now he is 27 and his other eye is starting to strain and he got glasses for that. He is very depressed and worried that his good eye will become eventually in the future.

I want to hear from somebody that has first hand experience with this situation and how to deal with it.

I just want to cheer him up and make him comfortable with it.
He had it since the birth. And the doctors said it can’t be treated. He is not in the US tho

I believe your friend should go to an ophthalmogist to get their opinion. If he already has, he should go to another one for a second opinion.

They should be able to remove the cataract and do an implant.

Question by sherry c: Would you have surgery on eye if only a 15 percent chance that it would work?
I have fluid buildup in my eye. It is causing the cornea and iris to be like stuck together. So I have major problems seeing (everything is very blurry and I can’t see anything that is written in paper). I get very annoyed while trying to use the cimputer. The doctor said that it would tale 3 surgeries and there is a 15 percent chance of it working. If I don’t have the surgery, there will be vision loss. The way I see it is either way I will lose my vision so why have the surgeries. I only have some vision in the other eye (congenital cataract). Just would like some thoughts on thus.

Thank you.
