Question by needya: who needs those thick glasses after cataract surgery and why? thax in advance.?

Answer by princeidoc
great question!
most modern cataract extractions involve replacing the crystalline lens with a silicone or acrylic implant. the patient usually still needs glasses or bifocals, but the glasses are generally normal & not thick.
BUT
prior to say the 1970’s, a lot of cataract extraction surgeries involved removing the cataract, but not replacing the lens with an implant. the result is called “aphakia” & leavess the patient VERY FARSIGHTED…usually around +15.00 diopters. hence the very thick “coke bottle” glasses
this is less & less common, as all cataract surgeries in the US & UK nowadays are lens “replacements” not just lens “extractions”.

Although you probably have this list of Free Clinics in Texas, it might be a good place to begin:
http://www.needymeds.org/free_clinics.taf?_function=list&state=tx
The next site to visit is this one specifically for Cataracts:
http://www.needymeds.org/copay_diseases.taf?_function=detail&program_id=472
which will connect you to this site:
Mission Cataract USA
http://www.missioncataractusa.org/index.php?n=1&id=1
Here is a direct link to their contact page – fill in the blanks and send:
http://www.missioncataractusa.org/contact.php?n=4&id=4&topic=
The other possibility is contacting a medical university in your area but since I don’t know where in Texas your mom resides, that is difficult to do. You can, however, do that specific search. Is she eligible for SSI?
It appears that Mission Cataract USA would be your first best hope because they deal directly with providing the service free.
Your mom certainly has a lot on her plate. You will probably have to do the reaching out for her.
Best of luck to all of you
