A friend of mine told me that undergoing laser eye surgery will cause cataracts 20 years after the operation. Is this true?

No, not true at all.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Laser surgery is on the outer layers of the cornea, and cataracts are inside the eye on the lens of the eye, which isn’t touched by the laser.

Everything about the career of the ophthalmologist seems right for me except the fact of surgery. I am fine with the idea of doing laser surgery but I however can not do any surgery blood related. I can be the assistant of a legit surgeon when it involves blood, but never a surgery for something involving so much pressure like the reattaching a retinal detachment, or removing a cataract and stuff like that.

Is there a way where I can become an ophthalmologist that only does small surgeries such as laser surgery? If not, are there any similar careers that would land me in a working environment of an eye clinic? I’m open to any office jobs! I am in high school and my passion for the human eye.

A cataract operation isn’t done with a laser.

It is such a simple procedure now, Ophthalmologists anywhere do it all the time with no problems.

I’m not sure I would go to Haiti or Bangladesh….but just about anywhere else is good.

I was operated for foreign body removal + retinal detachment + cataract on my left eye (right eye is normal). Even after all this my vision is only 6/24 because the detachment has taken part in the central part of my vision and has left a scar. Even 2 years after the surgery i am not able to synchronize both my eye to view an object.. because quality of my left vision is so poor..

Right now I have developed a dark circles under my eyes… It has formed like a thick patch. I really dont know what to do. I went to dermatoligist and i did cosmo peel and other peels for 8 weeks but nothing worked, dark circles are becoming much more thicker.

My questions are
i) Is there any latest technology to operate my retina and bring it back to normal so that i can have 6/6 vision
ii) Seriously I would like to get rid of the dark circles. I looking like an alien with those dark circles (patches). I would like to know the basic reasons (I usually sleep more than 7 hrs a day) and the methods to get rid of the same

Your retina doesn’t “die”. You may have a condition that needs corrected by surgery or other procedures but since the date is so far out, I don’t think it’s an emergency.

Scheduled to have first of two laser surgeries on Thursday to repair holes in retina. This has to be done before cataract surgery can be done. Curious as to what to expect. All help is appreciated.

painless at the time, but expect some irritation afterwards and a feeling of “what have I done to myself”

also you can smell some burning – but only for a short time and there is NO pain.

Just relax, listen to the doc and do what they say. Its a trauma for you but routine to them. Good luck

My dad has already gotten a cataract on his left eye and now his eye doctor all of sudden is asking him to perform a laser surgery for no reason, but the doctor claims its a preventative method. My dad is 44 years old and has type 2 diabetes. I felt it was unnecessary but I’m not a doctor so any thoughts on the subject would be great.
I’m pretty sure its a preventative method for diabetes retinopathy but I am unsure if there is a laser surgery to prevent diabetes retinopathy.

well it depends on the “laser” surgery. sounds like if its “preventative” he/she may be talking about a laser peripheral iridotomy to prevent high pressure from a narrow angle. if thats the case its not a “bad” idea. the fact that he’s diabetic doesnt matter for that.

but if you’re talking about laser RETINAL surgery like panretinal photocoagulation to “prevent” vision loss from retinopathy…well that probably needs to be done if he’s leaking fluid.

probably not talking about lasik.

could be laser trabeculoplasty as well to prevent high pressure

could be yag laser to stop an “after cataract” or posterior capsular opacification…

lots of “laser” here. too many choices…need to narrow it down some

edit: retinal or panretinal photocoagulation…i guess depending on how its worded could said be to “prevent” vision loss or further vision loss. nobody does PRP on eyes that are NOT leaking fluid, and when one jumps to doing PRP: who needs it & when & how much is done and where its pointed is all up for interpretation.

No, laser isn’t used for cataract removal.

But it is the most common procedure done with a 99 % success rate , and is done as outpatient .

What are the side effects of having a laser treatment for your far sighted eyes. Is there any chance of having an operational restriction in a future cataract developed in your eye?

I had it done for my nearsighted eyes 2 years ago. Not lasik but a similar procedure (flapless), Dr. Petelin (the best). I can’t find his website. Anyway, no dry eyes, no major side affects at all. In fact, my night vision is much better than with glasses before as well. My vision is 20/15 in both eyes. I’m super pleased with getting it done. I would do it over and over again. As far as cataracts I’ve never heard a link, however living in AZ like I do I will probably have to deal with them someday with all the sunshine we have. Dr. Petelin does cataract surgery too.
