Question by Brian: My dog has an irritated eye.?
I have a small dog (shih tzu) whose fur is cut short. I heard him whining on the couch as he was rubbing his eye. his eye is now red and squinting. it also looks like he has a tiny little spot of what looks like mucus, but its not, it doesn’t come off when i try to clean it. Every now and then i hear him whining because his eye is bothering him. i tried to flush his eye with contact solution instead of water, but its not helping. Is this a sign of cataracts? he’s 7 years old and im getting worried, but dint have much money. im a college student and pretty broke, and just paid for an expensive bladder stone surgery for him
he’s had a lot of bad luck. what should i do?

He may very well have a corneal ulcer. This is an abrasion to the surface of his eye. If you have never had a corneal injury, thank your lucky stars! They hurt like someone stabbing you with a knife in the eye. But they are usually not serious if they are treated properly. As with any eye problem, waiting is not a good idea. Usually waiting only leads to worsening of the condition, and an increase in the cost of treatment. I would strongly suggest that you take the dog to the emergency clinic tonight. I realize that cost is a factor. But waiting may cost more. Besides, if that is what is going on, it really, really hurts.
