Question by Jenna: horse’s eye completely clouded over, what could it be?
my friend just called asking if i knew what was wrong with her horse’s eye.
I haven’t seen the eye yet, so I can only report what she told me. The horse is an older Appaloosa gelding (with brown eyes, not blue).

she said a few days ago he appeared to have a small white cloudy patch in one of his eyes, and was a little bit spooky to that side, indicating he probably couldnt see well, but was fine otherwise.

now she says his entire eye, not just his pupil, is clouded over in an opaque blue-white color and he has no vision out of that eye. there is no dischange or draining from the eye, its not swollen, and besides blindness, he seems normal.

shes going to call the vet tomorrow, but in the meantime, what do you think this could be? cataracts only affect the pupil over the eye, but this horse’s eye is completely white

Question by insertnamehere: Cataracts in my horses eyes?
So, we have noticed that my horse has been acting a little funny and spooking at strange things and whatnot, and today the vet came out to do teeth floating and vaccines and he discovered early cataracts in my horses eyes. so he can still see but some things look fuzzy and thats most likely why he was spooking. i was wondering if there is anything we can do for them and i know we probably should have asked the vet but we forgot.
have any of your horses had cataracts? if so what did you do for them?

Question by horses_r_life: Can horses catch the cold or something like it?
Caruso, the morgan I lease, is sick or something. His eyes are watering (well he has a cataract in the left eye, and that eye always watered, but his good eye is watering too) He has a lot of gunk coming out of both nostrils, and he’s been coughing. He doesn’t usually cough, have stuff coming out of his nose, or have his good eye wrong. We think what ever it is he got from the new mare. She had some of the same symptoms but milder when she first came a couple weeks ago.
Is this like the horses version of the cold?
Is it something else, and if so, what is it?
If things get worse or if it doesn’t go away soon, the owner is going to call the vet.
There are four horses total there, and they are all rescues (not from rescue places though) two came from the same barn and were lesson horses, but they couldn’t keep them anymore, they didn’t want a horse with serious absesses in his hooves, so the owner of Caruso took them in (they are 26 and 30) Caruso was going to be put down as a yearling, he was on a morgan farm, and jsut because he was born with cataracts in one eye, they were going to put him down, that’s when he was taken in. The newest is a STB mare who came from NY (we’re in NH) She was in training to be a race horse, but wasn’t fast enough, the owner knew her from last year when she was in the same town she lived in, and she’d gotten really attached to her. When she found out she was going to be sold to a bad situation, and that they were bringing another horse over to where she was anyways, she had them bring her back in the trailer. I don’t think she came with any kind of healthy certificate.
And she plans on calling the vet in at the end of the week if things continue or start to get worse.

Yes its very normal for horses to catch a common cold, however if it gets severe (especially the coughing) you’ll need to call your vet.

Question by Maddy: Do cataracts in horses get worse over time?
I am looking at a 4yr old mare who has cataracts. She sees well enough and jumps without a problem. The problem is I have had problem horses before where they got injured and never made a full recovery. I don’t want to make the mistake of buying a horse that is only going to get worse. So my question is; Do cataracts in horses get worse over time?

Extra information on the subject would be great also! :)
