Question by Narpas Sword: Why is the main character in the Tell-Tale Heart so obsessed with killing the old man?
Is it seriously just because of his “vulture eye.” It seems a bit mean-spirited thing to me to kill someone because they have cataracts or something.
? after “eye.”

Yes…because if he doesn’t have the heart surgery, he will surely die far sooner than he would otherwise. Perhaps the cataracts could also be corrected surgically (don’t know, that depends on other factors). Deafness also comes in degrees…most people have at least some residual hearing that can be used to benefit from hearing aids or cochlear implants. It doesn’t matter that he’s mentally retarded; that doesn’t usually diminish the quality of life unless it’s very severe. (And the level of mental retardation varies in Downs…it is always present, but some are more affected than others.) IMHO, you shouldn’t deny a baby the chance at life because he or she has disabilities. Of course, some people would disagree with that, but my opinion is based upon much personal experience. Let’s just say that if it had been left up to the “experts”, I wouldn’t be here to write this answer.

My dad is 78 and was scheduled for cataract surgery last week. He has been extremely apprehensive about it for 3 months now. Even though he was nervous he showed up for the surgery. His heart rate went to 135 and the ophthalmologist called the cardiologist and they admitted him to the hospital and now the Dr. wrote a prescription for coumadin. This has him even more upset. Plus the cataract surgery was not done. All the blood work came back normal. It seems like a clear case of anxiety to me. What can he take before the cataract surgery so it does not happen again?
