Question by Victory: Anyone else with artificial lenses have this happen…?
I’m told that my artificial lenses (had cataract surgery in both eyes) reflect light just as cats’ eyes do. I’m very excited about this, partly because I admire cats, but also because I’m sure I can learn to position myself correctly to reflect light at will and scare the beejesus out of snotty young people.
Can anyone else do this?
Monty: My sister says they are a light blue.

I have one artificial lens in my right eye, got it as I had a bad infection after a cornea transplant.
I don’t know about being able to reflect light, but there are a few people I would like to scare the beejesus out of.
Ha ha good question.

It depends on the nature of the cataracts. If/when they progress to the extent that her vision is very effected by them, they can be removed with what is usually an uncomplicated procedure that will replace them with an artificial lens. She will need to make some visual adjustments, including dealing with possible light sensitivity, and difficulty seeing at some distances, but it’s generally not going to be the end of the world.
I haven’t a clue how long it might take for you to get in with an ophthalmologist, but rest assured, you will do so long before her cataracts need removing. In the mean time, contact RNIB (telephone 0845 766 9999 / 020 7388 2525) for resources that will help her more effectively cope with her remaining vision, including attending support / social groups.

Question by fishineasy™: What does this sound like and why does this mess seem to always happen to me?
I had been reading (nothing out of the ordinary) and I saw floaters in my right eye and things became blurry just in that eye. That was around noon and it is not better. I plan to go to the doctor in the morning. I did have cataract surgery in that eye about 4 years ago with no problems. What can the problem be? My brother just had problems with his and the doctor said he almost had a detached retina. Does it sound like that is what I have?

One of my friends had the problem you describe, and it was a detached retina. She had it operated on, where they put a bubble in there. I don’t understand it all, but they put a bubble in her eye and she had to lay upside down for a week, and then it healed and she’s doing fine. I’m sorry you have so many health issues. I know it’s frustrating. If it makes any difference, I’m glad you’re on YA. You sent me an e-card at Easter time that really made a difference in my life. You just have no idea. I will always be grateful to you for it. I will pray for your eye.
