you can, but you just take care of those eyes and listen to your doc. They will probably get worse through-out your life, but it is a possibility you will be fine as long as you do what the doctor asks.

Question by Oatmeal2348: My dog may be going blind …?
My miniature schnauzer has diabetes and, as a result, has now developed cataracts. I’m going in for a consultation in about a week, but have read that the surgery may cost as much as $ 3,000 per eye. I’d be hard pressed to be able to pay for that. Is it morally wrong for me to let him go blind? I know he wouldn’t be the first blind dog in history … grrrr.
Thanks for all the quick responses so far! BTW, Max is only 4 years old, and he knows the house pretty well. I’ll let you know what we decide.

So sad for your dog, but many dogs do well with blindness. Many owners would have to think very hard at spending that amount of money on a dog that due to diabetes has a limited life span to start.

Question by moosethehippo: CHANCES OF GOING BLIND AFTER EYE SURGERY?
My brother was diagnosed with retinoblastoma when he was a baby ,he lost the sight in his left eye which is now artificial and doctors managed to save his right eye .He is now an adult and has coped very well despite having a number of surgeries throughout his childhood and adult life . He has since been diagnosed with cataract in his right eye and after consultation the doctor has now told him that after surgery the chances of any sight in his eye are very slim.
I am not entirely sure on what operations he has endured on his eyes but because he has had such extensive surgery in the past they believe this could cause a usual simple procedure to fail. Any advice or experience u can share would be gratefully appreciated.
As you can imagine my family and myself are extremely distressed at the thought of this being a reality . I apollogise for not being able to give as much information as u might need but anyone who feels they could support us anymore i’d be amazingly thankful for information through e-mail.

I can’t thank you all enough, as this means a massive amount to me and my family.

How old is he? If the doctor has seen him for the first time, doesn’t know his surgery history and he has a dense cataract (such that you can’t see the inside of his eye), that is what he is supposed to say, because the cataract is limiting the amount of light that enters the eye so he can’t see, but if the retina is damaged even with a perfect surgery his vision will be impaired

Question by Indiana Jones: i’m going to have the nd-YAG laser procedure done on my eye and i have a few Q’s?
i had cataract surgery with IOL implant on may 18th and i just went to my dr today and he said that i would need nd-YAG laser done. (i know what its for) but i’m not sure exactly how its done.
i understand they dilate your eye and the laser breaks up the “secondary cataract”. my dr said it was painless but i’m a bit nervous.
here are my questions:
-do you have to stare directly at the laser? cuz i’m afraid that my eye will not be able to continuously stare in one spot. i try very hard to stare at something but after a few seconds my eye jumps somewhere else.
i just don’t want to move my eye and have the laser damage my eye some how.
i’m also worried cuz when i get nervous (even though my dr already explained that i have no reason to feel nervous about this) i start shaking like a leaf so i don’t want to accidentally move my head either.
-do they give you any type of anesthesia to ensure there is no pain or is there really no need for it cuz it really shouldn’t hurt anyways?

I had this procedure done several months ago on my left eye, after cataract surgery in April, 2008.
I think you are worrying needlessly. It is a very simple procedure that only takes a couple of minutes. You do not stare at a laser, although there will be a spot of light the doctor will ask you to look at. The doctor will have ways to deal with eye movement, so don’t worry.
Ask for a Zanax pill if you want to be more relaxed during the procedure. Take it about 45 minutes before the procedure. There is no pain associated with this procedure.
