Question by your not cool.: Can my eyesight be corrected?
I’ve never been able to clearly see out of my left eye. I was born with a cataract having it fixed as a baby, then I had a muscle tightened in my eye at 6, retina detachment at 9, and a tube put in at 14 due to high pressure in my eye. I can see only about a 20/400 out of that eye and 20/20 out of the other. I was wondering if LASIK or any other corrective surgery could improve my eye sight?

That eye cannot be corrected with LASIK since it never developed.

Question by Honey: Do I need to have an eyesight of 6/6 to work on a cruise ship in a customer service role?
I have been offered a training opportunity on a cruise ship. However I got my left eye injured when I was 11. My left eye was operated upon for stitches and for the eye lens. I had to go undergo cataract surgery as well later on. Since then my eye is as good as normal. Just that I wear glasses. My right eye is 6/6 after glasses but not the left eye. The vision is good but still not 6/6. Am I medically fit for working on a cruise ship or any other similar job?

Question by Tom P: Eye-sight problem after cataract surgery.?
After having surgery on both eyes images are larger with my left eye than they are with my right. I estimate a diff. of 25%. The lens implant for my left is identical to my right except for the diopter. The L. is +26.0 and the R is +26.5 – - When I complained to my Dr. he said that my problem was simply like one arm being longer than the other. I did not have the problem before surgery.

How long ago have you had surgery? Typically one eye is operated on before the other. If you have recently had the second eye completed, there might be a slight adaptation period as your eye heals and adjusts to vision with a new implant. Second, it is a good idea to have a full refraction to double check the finalized prescription. If you have a residual prescription that may cause a slight image difference between the eyes.

Question by ataimadi: EYESIGHT: What can cause sight in one eye to change one dioper in 2 years with little change in other eye?
My right eye has changed by one diopter in 2 years. My left eye is about the same. I have cataracts in both eyes but not so advanced that Medicare will pay to have them removed. What can cause change in one eye?

Answer by Amy
That is really not unusual or alarming. Just like your right hand can be different from your left, your prescription will generally not be the same in both eyes.

I would not worry unless your best corrected vision got worse, not so much about the prescription itself. (Generally for cataract surgery, your best corrected vision has to be 20/40 or worse.)

So, as long as both eyes are corrected close to 20/20, don’t worry about it. : )
