Question by hammerandnails88: What is the effect of a surgery on an Alzheimer’s patient?
My grandpa has cataracts and needs surgery to remove them. However he also has Alzheimer’s and I am worried about the effect anesthesia has with his disease.

The anesthesia shouldn’t affect the Alzheimers itself.

But anesthesia can cause short-term confusion, as can hospitalization. So that can make his Alzheimers seem worse.

Plus, if his dementia is severe, he won’t be able to participate in his own after-care, and may need to be watched closely or even restrained to keep him from damaging his eyes before they’re healed.

what could this mean? I’ve seen a dr about minor halos, glare, blur, and starburst effect I get from light sources. I’ve got an awful dry eye problem that began right before the light sensitivity began…the light sensitivity is worse at night but noticable in the day too and I’ve been told not to wear contacts anymore because of dry eyes though my perscription is not the issue… I had several tests including an OCT and the typical check for glaucoma, cataracts, and proper eye pressure.. However, for those tests my eyes were dilated, and that simply multiplies the problems I’m having so they don’t see anything out of the ordinary in the tests. Does anyone know what might be going on??
