When our dog (Bischon Frise) was about 18 months old she had cataracts develop very rapidly in both of her eyes. Successful surgery was performed in Denver, Colorado, by a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. Her follow-up care – over the next 12 months – was totally positive; no negative effects from the surgery. Thankfully for nearly 10 years now she has remained ‘problem free’ but in the last month we have noticed a milky color in one eye, with some development in the other. She has an appointment March 25th with her Vet. Our question is: has anyone ran into the similar situation? Thank You, in advance, for all positive feed back. By sharing [your] experiences we will then have additional “tools” to evaluate and compare (with her doctors recommendation) to help and support her.

What your dog had were most likely genetic juvenile cataracts. Cataracts do not grow back as the surgery removed the lens where they form. What you are seeing is probably some opacity caused by nuclear sclerosis, which is a normal part of the aging process. It generally does not cause blindness & is not painful, just a normal part of the aging process. Good luck!

I am writing because my cat has only one eye and i want to know if i am worrying myself over nothing by being concerned that he will eventually lose sight in his other eye,too. are cataracts and blindness the usual when it comes to cats aging?

Yes, as he gets older he might get cataracts, but they can be treated and vision restored just like in people . Try not to worry and enjoy him as he is and as long as he is OK, well , later on perhaps by then you have some money saved and he can get his sight back . My Maltese is 18 years old and just about blind .So you see, all animals can get it .

A traumatic cataract can develop at any age immediately after a blow to the eye or head or even many years later.

My eye doctor says I was born with cataracts, they were little but the one in my left eye seems to be getting bigger. I am VERY near sighted with astigatisim and now need bifocals. I see just fine when I wear my glasses. But aside from doctor doing more tests (which I really can’t afford) What happens when the cataract gets too large?

Let me start by stating that I am 22 years old and have lived with this condition all my life. I was born with a cataract in my left eye. Doctors told my mother that it was caused by ear drops used while she was pregnant. When I was around 16 I had laser surgery to remove the cataract. If I remember correctly, the doctor stated that they broke up most of it but it was too thick to remove it all. But this proceedure made light to another problem…I was told that because I was so old at the time, the nerves in my eye never had a chance to develope, so I would never have vision in that eye. I’m just wondering if it would be worth while for me to spend time attemping to develope my eye and how to go about it. I use to use big flash cards and cover my good eye to read them. Thanks in advance.
