Question by Ms. Moonbeam: Can lazik surgery correct astigmatism and cataracts?
I had an eye exam 6 month ago and my doctor said I had the very beginning signs of a cataract on my right eye. I also have astigmatism in both eyes. Because of this, my glasses do not correct my vision as much as I would like and I cannot wear contacts. Since, I have bi-focals they tried putting a different lense in each eye but I could not see at all with the contacts.
Approximately how long does is take from the beginning stages of cataracts until Medicare will pay for the surgery? Also, is this same surgery the same as lazik that is suppose to correct our farsightedness or nearsightedness? Also, will Lazik surgery correct astigmatism? If so, would it be adviseable to go ahead and pay for my own surgery and have it alll corrected at once?

Astigmatism cannot be corrected by surgical way, only with eyeglasses. I have it too. For the rest I dont know.

Question by NONAME: Should I get a second opinion, or is the vet correct?
My mother recently adopted a poodle. The vet says he’s about 3 years old, His left eye is decidedly cloudier than is his right, but the vet assures us that while it is a cataract, it’s in the very early stages and needs no treatment right now.
This vet is wonderful, and I don’t like to second guess him, but if there’s such a difference in the eyes that it’s apparent with the naked eye to someone with no medical training, does it seem realistic that his condition would really need no immediate attention?

Question by dopi: Will a cararact operation correct astigmatism?
Is it necessary for the eye surgeon who replaces a defective natural lens with an artificial lens (cataract surgery) to do an extra procedure to correct astigmatism or will the perfect artificial lens permit at least 20-30 eyesight? Or is the astigmatism caused by some other part of the eye that needs to be changed by the surgeon before the cataract surgery. I think that eyeglasses will correct astigmatism if it exists after the cataract surgery. If additional pre-cataract surgery is necessary to correct for astigmatism, what actual procedures are involved?

Irregular curvature ofthe cornea causes astigmatism, so the lens replacement will not correct it. Astigmatism is treated with glasses, or contact lenses, or laser surgery.
