Question by Bill Cousert: California Medi-Cal program and eye care?
As of 2009, California’s Medi-Cal program will no longer cover routine eye exams and glasses.

Does anyone know if they will cover other medically necessary services, like treatment of glaucoma or cataracts?

Best answer:

HIGHLY LIKELY. I guess I don’t *know* what California will & won’t cover with their state financial troubles, but I’d be surprised if they stopped paying for glaucoma & cataract treatments, procedures & medications

Question by Mercy: How can I find people to help fund 10 year old Reagan’s medical care?
This child got a traumatic cataract following perfoating a corneoscleral injury.
We do not know the state of the retina but we want to give him a chance.
1. He will need cataract surgery with an intra ocular lens = 35,000 /=
2. If the retina is found detached , he will need to be referred to mengo for further retinal detachment surgery approximately 100,000/=
3. Post operatively , he will come for a review for a minimum of foru times but each visit , the medications do not exceed 10,000 /= U sh.
4 . When he has recovered , he will need spectacle correction for any refractive errors at a cost of about 100,000/=(bifocal) .

These are the expected hospital costs.
If they opt to sleep in a private room , this at rate of 10,000/= per night.
At each surgery, they may stay for 4 days.
Other costs I am not sure of are transport costs and personal maintainnce for the child and attendant while in hospital.

Best regards,

Dr . Tindyebwa. L.K

Have you tried contacting your local newspapers? They may be willing to run an add asking for donations.

Question by james m: Our dog is going blind — how do we care for her?
Our dog is eight years old and has been diagnosed with diabetes. She’s getting insulin twice a day and we noticed last week that she’s been bumping into things, her eyes are clouded. Went to the vet this week and she does have cataracts and the vet would not advise any treatment for her sight. How do we care for her? We’ve got two other dogs and they all get along well. So far there doesn’t seem to be too much out of the ordinary and she gets around the house fairly well. Any suggestions?

Question by needya: can an optometrist take care of cataracts or do they need surgery by an ophthalmologist?
i’m not thrilled about surgery of any kind AND can one go blind if cataracts are NOT operated on ?
also, if surgery is done, does one need the very thick glasses or for that matter, any glasses after surgery other than reading glasses already worn.

Over time, cataracts worsen. Untreated, they can make a person’s vision almost nil.

An opthamologist is a surgeon that operates on the eye. He/she would be the person to discuss your concerns with,

Question by playwriter2180: What are the symptoms of cataracts and how are they taken care of through surgery?
i am an insulin dependant diabetic (35+ years) and i think i have cataracts…how are these taken care of and is surgury usually successful?

Best answer:

Answer by AJSMOM
symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision, feeling of film over eye and glares and “halos’ around lights (such as headlights from cars) the surgery is a relatively minor one in which the ophthalmologist makes a small incsion on the eye and removes the cataract,( which is basically a clouding of the natural lens in your eye). After that an artificial lens is implanted into the eye and this lens is made to last a lifetime. I work in ophthalmology and this is a routine surgery with a very high success rate. If you are having blurred vision you might want to monitor your blood sugar carefully since your vision does fluctuate along with your sugars.make an appointment to see an ophthalmolgist and determine whether or not your vision can be corrected with glasses, or if the cataracts are ready for removal. good luck ..
