Question by Technicolor Universe: How is your vision after Cataract Surgery? What Distances Can You See? What Is Blurry For You?
Please specify whether you got a monofocal or multifocal/accommodative IOL.
I would like to know what distances you are able to see clearly. What distances are slightly blurry, but acceptable, and what distances are just unbearably blurry.
Thanks!

If the surgeon uses a standard non accommodative IOL then the goal of surgery is to have both eyes see clearly at a distance of about 5-6 feet and further out. accommodative IOLs will not give you the same near vision you had when you were young but they will provide functional near vision in the reading to intermediate range.

Question by Arcane M: Girlfriend woke up after nap with blurry vision, help?
My girlfriend took a short nap (about 15-20 minutes) and woke up with blurry vision in her right eye. Tried eyedrops, anti-irritant, emergency eyewash.
No hair, dirt, cataract, nothing on the surface.
However, she did go to sleep with glitter makeup on and I swear that when I look into the pupil I can see tiny glints of glitter. Is it possible for glitter to work its way into her pupil without her noticing?
Accepting any alternative diagnosis, treatments, ideas before we go to her optometrist tomorrow.

Question by Alexander: Why is my eye sometimes blurry in the morning?
I’m only 15 years old and usually when I wake up in the morning, I notice my eyes are blurry. It slowly disappears and is totally gone in about half an hour. It happens maybe 3-4 times a week. Is there anything wrong with my eyes? (I wear glasses.) It might be my hypersensitivity to the light in the morning or maybe I have cataracts, but I’m not sure.

Question by Helen Z: If my Retina doctor can’t figure out why my vision is blurry, should he order a Cat Scan?
This is all taking place after cataract surgery.

I don’t think Cat Scans would pick up anything within your eyes. Maybe a MRI but I’m sure there are other tests they can do before that.

Question by Linda p: cataract surgery, I just had it done but I still have the blurry vision, anyone else have this?
I had the restore lens put in, the DR said my lens looks still a bit cloudy and that laser might help. This is very dissapointing.

It sounds as though you have a “posterior capsule opacity” or PCO for short. When the cataract is removed the surgeon leaves something called the capsulary bag behind. The artificial lens is then implanted into the bag. In somewhere around thirty percent of the people this bag will become cloudy giving the patient symptoms very similar to what they experience when they first noticed they were developing cataracts. In some people it happens fairly rapidly after cataract surgery, some people it takes years to develop and some never develop it at all!
The surgeon can use a laser to clear this clouding off. It only has to be done once and only takes a few seconds. It is not painful and does not require an anesthetic. It is just like putting your chin in the lamp the doctor uses to look at your eye for a few minutes. A few drops to dilate the eye and a numbing drop in the eye is all it really takes. Results are fairly instant, however a few floaters for a couple of weeks are normal after the procedure.
