Question by DrasticGame: I’m partially blind- is being a doctor out of the question for me?
I was born with a cataract in my right eye and my vision is largely impeded on the right side. I have flawless vision on the left, but the right side is so severe that I use a seeing eye dog. However, I’ve always dreamed of being a surgeon, and now that I’m a high school junior and looking at colleges, I’m starting to wonder if this is possible for me. Your thoughts?

Well, to be honest I’m not quite sure. But seeing as you have 1 perfect eye, you’d think there is a high chance that you would be able 2 become a doctor

Question by Silly Rabbit_<3's Merlin: I think I am being very selfish with my dad’s depression.?
I’ll start from the beginning. My dad had cataract surgery on both eyes, and they haven’t completely healed yet. One eye is still a bit fuzzy and the other eye is very fuzzy. Because of his eye problem, he’s unable to work, read, or do any of the things he enjoys. For the last month or so, he’s gotten very depressed, noticeably. My mom wants me to come over more to visit him, but it upsets me to see him depressed and I don’t go as often as I used to. I know it’s really bad and selfish of me to do so, but I just don’t know how to deal with it.

What should I do?

Take one for the team!! he is your only father!! my mom was passing away from her own drug abuse.. and as much animosity as i had because of her actions and it being a self inflicted health issue.. i sat the past aside and enjoyed my sober mother for the last 4 mon. of her life.. you have to be an adult about this, we are all going to be face w. similar situations like this.. ask yourself, “how will i feel once he is gone and there was so much time i could have spent w. him.”
He can and will get worse, spend time w. him while you can, dont show him you are uncomfortable be uplifting even if it breaks you inside and you go home drained! good luck to you and your family! :)

Question by The Real Shaz 3: Is there a surgery that is being done on these eye patients?
I understand that Pakistan was running regular eye clinics in the Eastern province. Wasn’t there a lens donation program in Malaysia that was spearheaded by WHO? Inoperable cataracts are a very common situation in Sri Lanka that is not limited to the aged – it must be a hereditary condition because regardless of geography, environmental conditions or other commonly followed factors. I recall reading about a lens donation program several months ago and wondering why an area with such high incidents of cataracts and associated problems would be considered for such.

This sounds like a very positive program

Question by Big John: feels like eye being pushed out when weight lifting?
no kidding….scrunch my eyes up when lifting as it feels like there is pressure behind it and it might get pushed forward….just one eye…it has always been the weaker eye but now I can’t read even large writing with it. I don’t notice unless I close my good eye(can’t see properly) or weight lift (feel pressure). I am 39. history…Mum has macular degeneration and cataracts.

Spent the last year or so studying for various CPA exams (I know I suck as a student) but even with heavy studying in the past, the poor eye always bounced back after a day or two. Been to a military doctor in Iraq and had an eye test in Scotland…both said get a pair of glasses with a prescription for one eye or don’t worry about it if the other eye is picking up the slack. I emailed John Hopkins after searching answers and am waiting to hear back.

Anyone know what causes this?

My suggestion would be to breathe when you life weights. Exhale on the exertion movement. You are probably holding your breathe (a common habit in weight lifting). This raises the pressure in your head…thus causing the pressure behind your eye.

Question by Renard: Do you need surgery in the future after being diagnosed with a cataract?
Once a cataract has been diagnosed, is it likely that a surgery is required in the future? Can you live with cataracts without having a surgery if it only slightly affects your vision and does cataracts stop growing?

Best answer:

Answer by BlkBear
Only if the cataract gets bad enough to interfere with your vision. I have one in each eye, that I have had since I was around 25 years old, (53 now) and they have not progressed (at least according to my eye doctors over the years), to need anything to be done about them, other than monitoring them. Mine do not have any affect on my vision now and never have.

I know people much younger than myself (10 to early 20’s) that have cataracts that have had to be taken care of by surgery. So it will depends on the type, of cataract it is, and how bad it happens to get over time.
