Question by lovemybucks: 5yr old Maltese has bluish white pupils that dialate back and forth. Could he be blind or have cataracts?
We just rescued “Zoey”, he was going to be euthanized at the animal shelter.
He is a beautiful 5 year old boy. The best dog you could ever have! He has not had one accident in the house yet! We are hoping that he is not blind, but he will walk into things quite often. We have been doing some research on cataracts and blindness in dogs. His eyes look like the pics of those taken of cataracts. He has a vet appt. this week coming up. I just didnt know if anyone has any dogs that have cataracts to help possibly shed some light on this for us. This is our first inside dog and we are just totally in love with him. If he does end up being blind, he will only be loved more…if that is even possible?!

You can develop another cataract at any time. It would all depend on your age too. Older people do develop cataracts, they are slow growing. The odds that an older person would develop another one are high.
If a younger person has a cataract, that is unusual. The chances of a younger person developing another one would depend on why they had the first one. Usually the doctor is able to help with information on cataracts in younger people.

It depends on what your planning on doing, just try not to sweat a lot cause the last thing you want to do is irritate your eyes.

Question by PCL: can cataracts come back following surgery ?
Best answer:
Answer by David Richardson, MD
Cataracts do not come back after cataract surgery. However, sometimes the vision can worsen after surgery from a haze (or scar) forming behind the lens. This is called posterior capsular opacification (or PCO). YAG laser is used to remove a posterior capsular opacification (or “after-cataract). You can read about this in more detail at:
http://www.sgveye.com/en/component/content/article/70-cataracts-and-cataract-surgery/302-posterior-capsulotomy
Probably the most important decision someone who is considering cataract surgery must make is what surgeon to choose. I have created a document for my cataract patients to help them in choosing a surgeon. The article can be viewed by clicking this link:
http://sgveye.com/en/resources/35-about-your-eyes/233-10-things-you-must-know-before-choosing-your-cataract-surgeon
The advice in this document can be applied to choosing any surgeon in any specialty, not just cataract surgeons.
Sincerely,
David D. Richardson, M.D.
