Question by Marla: What do you want to ask about dogs?
What can I do for my 7yr old English Springer Spaniel that has just started to get cataracts in both eyes. She is having a hard time being able to even go outside. The Vet said to change her diet, will this help?

Best answer:

Answer by Aphrodite ☼Dobe uses a PRONG
My cat has cataracts in both of his eyes. Not once has my vet suggested to change his diet and I have no idea how that would help.
The best and only option I can recommend is surgery. He had surgery on one eye at a time and then has eye drops. The problem was he could barely see before they did the surgery – now his eyes look foggy to a degree, but he has no issues with his sight.

Question by Sarasvah: Question about medical deductions on Income taxes….?
I recently had interocular lenses implanted in my eyes. Most of my cataract surgery was covered by insurance. However, I opted to have Crystalens lenses implanted (which is considered a “cosmetic” upgrade from standard single vision lenses).

The total for both of my lenses was $ 4800 (ouch!)

Can I use this as a medical expense on my taxes next year?

Question by kitty86meow: About cataracts…?
I was recently told by my optometrist that I have “small cataracts” in both eyes that she said are different from the ones that you need surgeries for. Anyone know anything about that?

Best answer:

Answer by Spectacle
Yeah, almost everyone has tiny ones. Usually they are either heredity or UV exposure related. They do not cause issues so most doctors don’t really say much about them.

Question by Fathead Y: Do medication warnings about glaucoma apply to secondary glaucoma which is controlled?
Specifically, I was diagnosed with secondary glaucoma as a child because of a cataract surgery when I was very young.

I have tubes in my eye which control the pressure (it’s about 17) and absolutely no glaucoma in my other eye. I do not take any drops for the glaucoma.

I want to take a medication which warns that those with glaucoma shouldn’t take it. Since technically I’m not currently suffering from glaucoma, is this something I need to worry about?

Meds usually specify. Call your pharmacist. They are a wealth of information.

why not ask the doc? i had both of my lenses replaced. forgetaboutit. they will never fall out. trust me. i actually asked my ophthalmologist, as his nurse said they,d wash out in the shower. he laughed. i,ve had them since 2005, and 2007. i shower, work out, sneeze, laugh, etc. they,ve remained in place perfectly. i,m 63, and have 20/40 vision as a result of my implants. i had 20/100 in one eye before surgery.
