Question by :) : Question about my dog’s eye?
My dog (who is 3 years old) seems to be having an issue with one of her eyes. Her left pupil appeared to be clouded for a day or two, and today the vet said he wasn’t exactly sure of what was going on, but that it might be an infection. He gave us an ointment to put on her eye and said to check back in a few days. Now, she seems to avoid opening the eye that was clouded and sometimes tries to scratch it. I just looked at both of her eyes and noticed that they were EXTREMELY red underneath her pupils. Does any of this sound familiar? If so, what can I do to help her?

Note: We asked the vet specifically about a cataract – he said that since the cloudiness appeared within a matter of a few days, in addition to her being relatively young, it’s more than likely that it isn’t a cataract.

My shih tzu has eye ulcers. The vet can run a dye test to check for them.

Question by Helel: Multiple questions about the eye.?
Hey, I have a Biology test coming up on Thursday, and the teacher is a bit strange, in that she asks questions that have come up on past exams. So I’ve got such a booklet open in front of me, and there are some questions here to which I don’t know the answer, and which probably will come. So I’m posting them here.

(1mk) 1.) Early types of contact lenses were made of non-permeable glass. This could allow lactic acid to build up in part B, causing discomfort.

Suggest why lactic acid builds up when people use contact lenses made of glass.

(1mk) 2.) The cornea has no blood vessels. Suggest why it is possible to graft in a replacement lens here without it being rejected.

(2mks) 3.) Suggest a simple method you could use to measure the extent of the field of view of a human.

(4mks) 4.) Describe the reflex action in the iris when the intensity of light entering the eye is suddenly increased.

(1mk) 5.) Suggest why many animals have most of their sense organs on the head.

(1mk) 6.) Give one advantage of having two eyes (believe it or not, I don’t know this. <_<).

7.)The lens is made of protein. In some people, part of the lens may become cloudy. This is known as a cataract.

(2mks) A.) Describe a test for protein.
(2mks) B.) Suggest how a cataract would affect the function of the lens

(2mks) 8.) A person with a cataract can have their cloudy lens replaced with one made from a special material. Suggest 2 properties the material would need to have to be successful as a lens.

(2mks) 9.) Describe how glucose moves from the aqueous humour into the lens, when the concentration of the glucose is abnormally high.

And that's all. You don't have to answer them all, but if you know one, just give the number (and A or B if present) and its answer. These are all questions from different years, but our teacher is mad, she could pull a question from any one of these, regardless if we've learned about it or not.

Thanks in advance.
I looked up some of these questions on the internet, and I got some answers, such as the sense organs on head one, or the test for protein one, but others, like measuring the field of view, or the replacement lens, I didn't find anything. That's why I asked here. My own text books don't contain any info on these.

Besides, isn't this site named Yahoo Answers?

A much better way to prepare for the test would be for YOU to look up the answers to these questions. When you’ve done the research, you will know the material much better than if someone merely tells you an answer.

Question by monkeydamour: Question about cataracts…?
My mother had cataract surgery. Her lenses were replaced with plastic lenses. She heard that cataracts can regrow after five years or so. Is she in danger?

Best answer:

Answer by princeidoc
cataracts cannot “re-grow”. thats not possible, tho it is a very common misconception. once you have cataract surgery, you cannot ever have a cataract again.

however there is a condition in which your body deposits debris or cells onto the backside of the capsule near your new implant. i call that “posterior capsular opacification”. THE CONFUSION ARISES IN THIS CONDITION’S “LAY-TERM” which is “after-cataract”. since patients often call this an “after-cataract”, some people understandably get confused.

posterior capsular opacification is treated with a fast & easy laser procedure called “yag capsulotomy”. this also creates confusion, as many patients subsequently think that cataracts can be treated by laser.

in short:
cataracts can’t “re-grow”
cataracts cannot be treated by laser

“after-cataracts” can occur after cataract surgery
“after-cataracts” are treated by laser

Question by ~*Afureru Namida*~: How do you feel about disfigured, blind eye?
I was born with a detached retina that wrapped around itself, resulting in perma blindness. Over time, a cataract developed, which has make my eye a blue-gray color, the pupil very small and there is a white dot in the middle. Also, the eye in general is small. and tends to wander since it’s not completely attached. I usually wear somewhat long (but not long enough to tuck behind my ear) sideswept bangs over it, as I’m very self-conscious about it. When I come into some money (about 2k), I plan to get a scleral shell.

My good eye is very pretty. It’s a green color with a very light brown in the middle, resembling a sunflower.

I was made fun of all of my life because of it and as I stated, tend to cover it with hair in a style that seems inconspicuous. Also, with it covered, there’s no confusion as to which eye to look at, even though you would think it were obvious, given it’s appearance. Would you cover your eye if you were in my shoes? Would you wear an eye patch? Sunglasses?

Question by Foxide: Question About Having No Lens On The Eye?
I had a detached retina that resulted in three surgeries altogether. During the vitrectomy surgery they also did cataract from the gas bubble that was in my eye. They ended up scraping the lens off my eye. It was all only in my left eye, the right one was fine.

I had insurance then because I was under 21, but now I do not cause I recently had my 21st birthday. All on my own, too so no chance of parents helping in any way shape of form.

I was wondering what kind of artificial lens can be implanted onto the eye? Which one is the best one? And how much do these surgeries cost? I am having a hard time finding out online so I am hoping someone who knows what I am going through could help.

I tried getting contacts at this regular eye place, but they do not seem to work. The prescription is +11.00 and when I put it in everything looks like it is wiggling slightly, really bright, and I can kind of see far away but when I held up the contact box to read some words it was like I had no contact in at all. It was literal just a blue and white mush of colors that I did not even know was words.

To top it off, I asked the lady at the contact place if she knew what she was doing. I explained to her the situation and now after I paid all this money, except I did not buy the left eye contacts since I only had the trial one, she is telling me my eye is too messed up and that I need to go to an Ophthalmologist. Big what the frakin’ frak there since she told me she had done this so many times for people in my shoes. Also, is that right of her?

Aw man, please I need someone who knows. No crap please. The darkness amplies my blindness from my left eye and I am tired of walking into stuff at night when it is not even that dark. Oy. For the record, my right eye is completely fine and updated. Another reason why it would be nice to have someone who can understand literally what I see with no lens on one eye and fine vision in another. It is some weird stuff, let me tell you.

Okay thanks to anyone who really helps. >.< Scary to be without vision, you know?

Regarding insurance: I was under the impression that the new health care bill (now one year old I think) allows for parents to cover a child up to age 26. Inquire!

Regarding +11 contacts: Maybe this is still not strong enough; but it may also be the limit for contacts. You may need glasses with some small amount of additional magnification.

“Eye is too messed up”: This may be an expression of her limited knowledge. Talk to someone else.

Something to think about: If you had retinal detachment in one eye, is it possible in the other? Find this out, and find out how to keep the right eye healthy!

What do you think? Answer below!
