How To Treat Cataracts?
A lot of people are familiar with the word “cataracts,” but most don’t know much about the actual condition itself. Unfortunately, cataracts affect thousands of people across the world and are currently unable to be cured.
Cataracts are a condition that clouds the vision by changing the structure inside of the lens. It most often affects older adults, but also targets diabetes patients and those that are under high exposure of UV rays. Although cataracts have 3 different types of conditions, they all work the same way. They slowly cloud vision until the person can hardly see or becomes completely blind. Obviously, no one wants to sacrifice their vision, so treating something like this can be very important.
The unfortunate thing about cataracts is that it can be very difficult to treat. Since the problem lies within the lens of the eye, surgery is very risky and should only be undergone when the patient is aware of the risk and when there are no other options. Unfortunately, the alternative treatments for cataracts are few, so most people elect to get surgery. Surgery has been used for hundreds of years to treat cataracts, and interestingly enough, this particular surgery was actually introduced in India.
There are some current test-treatments being used for cataracts that involve some various prescriptions medications and eye drops. However, these treatments are still in the experimental phase. If you are interested in experimental treatments, then you should let your doctor know so that he or she can do the necessary research to acquire them. It might take some time for your doctor to find all of them and learn which one is best, but you should always remember that experimental treatments can be dangerous.
Success in treating cataracts is never guaranteed, although with modern surgical techniques and procedures, this process is getting much easier. The doctor will basically use precision instruments to remove the cataracts from your eye. Many times, complete vision is restored, however in some cases there is still a loss of vision. In some people the cataracts actually return, which can be very frustrating.
The first thing to do if you think you have cataracts is to talk to your doctor and get a correct diagnosis and prognosis. At that point, you will be able to decide how you want to treat your condition and what the best options are. Someday, hopefully sooner rather than later, a cure for cataracts will be discovered and the condition will be conquered forever. In the meantime, I suggest taking antioxidant supplements to help prevent the effects of aging, keeping yourself away from UV rays, and wearing sunglasses when you go outside. Just these 2 tips alone can be enough to prevent cataracts from affecting your vision.
