Question by Karen J: Should I put my Scottie dog through surgery for cataracts? He is 12 years old.?
He is very healthy otherwise and still goes on walks and chases rabbits (he can’t catch them, never could), eats well, navigates through our 2-story house just fine even though he doesn’t see very well. Is it better to put him through the fear and trauma of surgery, or let nature take its course and allow him live in peace, maybe wondering why his people don’t turn the lights up? Which is the more compassionate course?

from what you said, i would let nature take its course, dont traumatize him and the surgery could kill him

Question by T.U: Refractive eye surgery for children?
I am told that LASIK is not advised for children with congenital eye defects such as myopia and hypermetropia, or even cataracts. How then can this issue of myopia, (etc) be solved permanently and as soon as possible in young children, especially if it is causing them a great deal of discomfort and putting their vision in serious jeopardy.
Wearing spectacles and contact lenses is not of much help because it does not address the root of the problem—–that is, disorders in the structure of the eye.
Any suggestions! Any construction suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

b/c refractive surgery doesnt prevent myopia PROGRESSION. nearsighted children get more nearsighted. lasik just removes the nearsightedness that is present at the time, but if/when the patient continues to get more nearsighted…the patient would need repeated refractive surgeries, which is not only expensive & totally unfeasible, but also you’d quickly run out of cornea to burn away.
must be stable (same Rx over & over again) before lasik would be ok. almost no nearsighted child is myopically stable

Question by Katie Z: Can cataracts on dogs go away?
My puppy’s eye had a blue film over his eye. We took him to the vet and they said he had a cataract. They gave us some eye drops and said that he would have to see a specialist. So, will the blue on his eye go away?

Question by Ronnie: What is the normal price for cataract surgery for a poodle?
Best answer:
Answer by ckm1956
A few years back, it cost us ~$ 2500 for our dog. Very successful.
Be sure you pick an experienced vet that’s done a lot of them. A university vet school is another good option.
Also, see if the doc is diabetic. Apparently, diabetes is a leading cause of cataracts in dogs.
Our dog did well with the surgery. You could tell that he was his old self. The diabetes was treated & he lived for another 10 years.

I recently had a cataract operation, nothing short of a miracal in my opinion, I have the second one done in February, I find it difficut at present because I used to have bifocal glasses, I am told that I will still need reading glasses, but I dont care, I pay to have my eyebrows done, it is such a small thing when everything else is so clear. Good luck. xx
