My 8 year old dog has a cataract in his left eye, is there another treatment other than surgery? I’ve heard of prescription eye drops called Ocluvet, has anyone ever used that on their pet?

My female Springer had cataracts in both eyes but she coped very well and lived until she was 14 y.o. The Vet prescribed steroidal eye drops for her but she eventually went blind, poor thing.
Springers have an amazing sense of smell and this helped her tremendously. Although she couldn’t see latterly she seemed to know where everything was and you could rely on her to be at your feet as soon as she heard the clink of her food dish.
I understand surgery can be performed for cataracts in dogs and it might be worth doing this to give your dog a better quality of life. This was never offered to me for my dog unfortunately.
I hope all works out well for him. Good luck.

I had a male dog that had cataracts in both eyes. My vet prescribed eye drops and they contained steroid’s. They worked for a few months but eventually he went completely blind. He lived for several more years. He was a house dog so you had to make sure none of the furniture was moved, because they learn their way around. When one loses their eyes another part of their body will strengthen.

I have a 12 year old Australian Cattle Dog and he has cataracts in both eyes. We used eye drops from the vet, but this does not stop the growth of the cataract. The only sure way is to have surgery and since my dog is so old it is not worth putting him through the trauma of surgery. He knows his way around his yard and they do adapt. Since your dog is young you may want to consider the surgery. I too asked my vet about the drops and she said that if they worked everyone would know about them. She didn’t think they would do anything.
Ask your vet is they have heard about them and what their opinion is.

this might be a stretch but make him some marijuana brownies or mix it with his dog food. It might be too expensive in the long run however
