Diabetes affects eyesight when sometimes the blood vessels in the retina break. The blood will spill and prevent the light from reaching the retina, the part that you see with.
Cataracts are different, the lens of the eye gradually becomes opaque and loses the ability to transmit light.
A short operation will remove the old lens and install a new plastic lens so you can see again.
If blood vessels break in the retina, you must see your doctor so he can “laser weld” the vessels before you lose sight.

I have had diabetes for 42 years. I have had cataracts and surgery for them in both eyes–and had the surgeries in my 20s! Anyone can get cataracts with or without diabetes. I believe that those with diabetes are prone to getting them earlier, though (but not sure on this, just my belief). With cataracts, you can have a simple surgery (outpatient) where they remove the lens and put in a new plastic one so you can see good again. It is funny when I had my surgery. All my life I had been nearsighted (could see up close but not far away). Once I had the cataract surgery, it was the opposite–I am now farsighted! lol It was real fun when they had done one eye and had to wait until that one healed to do the other one–nearsighted in one eye and farsighted in the other! lol Talk about depth perception being off!
