Ok, I Am At It Again…but Can Someone Explain This To Me?
Posted by: in Cataract Eye Drops, tags: Again...but, Explain, Someone, This
I pulled more dogs for rescue from the local high kill rate shelter and I am irrate at people.
Can you explain why someone would allow a dog to have mange so bad that there is NO fur left on their head? And can you also explain why once you let your unaltered, 5-6 year old dog get this bad, you will just sneak by the shelter in the middle of the night and dump him in a cage?
Why would you allow a two year old, PURE BRED Boston Terrier’s eye become so ulserated that it explodes? (May not be the right term, but you get the point.) Do people have ANY idea how much that must have hurt the dog and how long it took to get this bad? And why did these lovely examples of humanity would also dump it in the cage in the middle of the night?
Also, what is the big deal about dropping off your dogs to the shelter to be put-down because they are “too old”? I have a beautiful Shih Tzu, ugly Chi/Pug mix, and a sweet Pom that are both around 10 years old, because they were too old. The Shih Tzu and Pom have cataracts, but they have plenty of “pep” left! They are happy, healthy, and should have a good 4 to 5 years of life left! There is no real, quality of life issue, since they are able to eat fine, move around fine (they must have some type of vision because they don’t bump into things) and have no “accidents” around the house.
OK, folks, fill me in! Why would somone do this? Do people not realize that a dog is for life? Do they not understand that dogs sometimes need medical care and it is not free? Or, do people just not care?

Lazyness & Lack of responsibility.
The cute puppy, turns into old news.
The sad truth is…
Its hard to look after a dog…..its easy to neglect them.

It doesn’t take much to see what humans do to other humans so if they’ll do it to their own, they don’t see anything wrong with doing it to another species. Don’t even get me started on the inhumanity of the world.
I am a Sociologist and I don’t even understand it.

Humanity has become disgusting and disgraceful. there are hardly any decent people left. and the fact is that these ignorant bastards keep getting pets and feel the need to drop them off at the shelter as soon as it’s not convenient for them to own the animal anymore.

We live in a disposable society.
Why do you think that rest homes are so popular? Nobody wants to take care of granny, it is just easier to pawn her off and let her die all alone.

It’s more that people don’t care. There are a lot of people who see animals as being disposable. Toss them out when they are done and/or tired of them.

All i have to say is because people are jacka**es. I think there should be neuter/spay laws for all the idiots in the world

People suck.

These are the same people that send their kids to school with no lunch, the same people who drive with children with no seat belt on, same people who throw their trash on the side of the road, same people who think flushing paint down the drain is ok.
They’re people with little minds, no social conscience, no awareness, people self-centered and self-serving.

Kats, I see this every day.
I am on several email lists for shelters around my state. I get dozens and dozens of emails a day about labs in particular… but other breeds as well. The stuff that I read is truly the stuff of nightmares. It never changes and every once in a horrific while, you’ll see some other @#($(%$(&%#$%&@%) who has come up with a unique way to neglect or abuse their dog.
I have no real answer for you other than there is evil in the world. We can only hope that they pay for their deeds later…. and those of us who rescue keep spreading the word and doing what we can.
Bless you for saving those babies.

Part of it could be the economy, but most of it is because people are too “throw away” in their thinking. They don’t care to put out money for a pet if they can just get rid of it after a few years or when it has problems.
My pets will stay with us till they die of natural causes. I get my pets with the intentions of them being around for their average life span.

i am still wondering the answer to your question!! i mean people and dogs should be treated the same!!! they have all these rules against child abuse but why don’t they care about animals? look at puppy mills for example!!
GOOD LUCK FINDING YOUR ANSWER!
anyway i think the reason that happened to the older dogs you are talking about is because at first it is a cute little puppy and then it turns into a big nuisance! people should really think about the responsibility they are taking on when they adopt an animal!!

People just don’t care anymore. Our society has made people think it’s okay to just throw away an animal or even a child if you just don’t want the hassle anymore. Today’s society really doesnt give a crap about any living thing but themselves and it’s horribly sad.

I think alot of people don’t realize they are for life. I didn’t think that way for years
I think there are good reasons to re home your animals but there is no excuse to let them life in pain and misery. That is uncalled for. I don’t know how someone could get rid of a pet that they have lived with for 10 years. I couldnt do it just because they were too old.

Imagine this scenario multiplied by 100 (an extremely conservative estimate of the number of shelters per state) multiplied by 50 (number of U.S. states) multiplied by 365 (number of days per year). Scary, huh, that there are tens of thousands of dogs dumped at shelters in conditions such as this and for reasons like this EVERY YEAR. And what you’ve described here isn’t even the most horrendous of circumstances, this is “same old same old.” Not to mention cats.
I don’t have the answer to the “why” but I have the answer to the “how.” Most of it begins with backyard breeders, pets stores, and puppy mills not educating those who buy their pups, not caring, not following up, not placing with a return contract. This ignorance trickles down to the owners and to society in general.
One solution? Perhaps if every pet owner made it a new year’s resolution to volunteer at their local shelter for one hour, one day, one week, one month — and see for themselves the apathy that exists among fellow humans. It would pull many heads out of the sand, and may be the beginning of the end of the need for rescuers like you.

The mange case is more common that people understand. No one gets how painful, irritating and annoying it is for the dog to have. I’ve seen a case where the dogs entire body who had 80% hair loss from the disease.
“Too old” is common too. I was working a few days ago at the front desk and a middle aged woman came in popping her gum and holding her purse with a terribly frightened Yorkshire terrier in it and she looked at me and said “this dog is far past her prime, she wont’ stay in the purse when we’re in public and I can’t handle it any more” and pushed the dog at me.
The dog was BARELY nine years old. Can you believe that? A perfect condition Yorkshire Terrier dumped because its ‘past her prime’. I wanted to shank her via dog biscuit…
People don’t care. They never have, and they never will. I have a 15 year old toy poodle with a full cataract in one eye and a half in the other and you’d never know it unless you asked his age. He bounces around, chases our 14 week old puppy, wrestles with the newfoundlands at the park, and never stops moving.
People suck. Rescue as many animals as you can (better with you in a shelter than with some idiot who thinks nine is fossilized.).
